Overview
Nopa Fish is a West Coast seafood market and kitchen located in San Francisco's iconic Ferry Building, dedicated to serving sustainably sourced fish and food. As a Counter Server, you will be the first to interact with guests and present our mission, which is to connect guests to the story behind our dishes and seafood case, and provide warm, efficient, and knowledgeable service. You’ll work closely with the kitchen, your peers, our fishmongers, and our management team to ensure each guest has the best experience possible.
At Nopa Fish, we believe that great hospitality starts with care for our guests, our ingredients, our team, and the communities and waters that sustain us. If you love good food, enjoy sharing knowledge, and take pride in thoughtful service, you will thrive in this role.
Key Counter Server Responsibilities
- Guest Service: Our guests are our top priority, and as a Counter Server you are the primary representative for our restaurant. You will welcome and engage all people in our restaurant with genuine hospitality. Strong communication skills are required for this position, both in person and over the phone. You must be able to comfortably and confidently guide guests through our menu, answer questions about ingredients, sourcing, our beverage program, the assortment in our fish case, and all things Nopa Fish.
- Product Knowledge: You will maintain a strong understanding of West Coast seafood, including species, seasons, fishing methods, and sustainability practices. You will draw on that knowledge to help guests make informed choices on items from our fish case. It is critical that we maintain true integrity with our fish, how it is caught, and where it is from. If there is something you don’t know, you must find the answer from someone on our team and ensure guests get accurate information. It goes without saying that you will also have a full understanding of our menu, how and where we source ingredients from, allergies, possible modifications, etc.
- POS & Order Management: You will use Toast to ring in orders accurately, process payments, manage modifiers, discounts, and ensure orders flow smoothly, and guests are informed about wait times, 86’d items, and daily specials.
- Presentation & Cleanliness: You are the face of the Nopa Fish brand, and to that end, your personal appearance, grooming, and hygiene are a top priority. Your apron is clean and pressed, and you adhere to the Nopa Fish uniform guidelines. Perfumes and scents are not allowed and must be kept out of the restaurant. Nails should be kept shorter and clean to adhere to safe food handling standards.
- Workspace and Restaurant Cleanliness: You keep your workspace tidy, the counter clear and clean. You are responsible for table maintenance and turning tables as quickly as possible so that new guests can sit. You will understand appropriately keeping the beverage/grab & go area stocked, organized and visually appealing. All food safety and sanitation guidelines are followed without exception.
- Team Support: You are a proactive person who notices things that need to be done. You will take responsibility for restocking, opening, and closing duties, and you will jump in where needed to support the team and maintain a calm, collaborative service and environment. While team members may have areas of focus during a shift, every task is collectively everyone’s responsibility to ensure it is completed.
