We are looking to hire a Sheet Metal and Damper Repair Mechanic Helper to join our team! Your main responsibilities will be to assist the lead mechanic with installing various types of dampers including fire, smoke, and fire/smoke dampers, installing duct access doors, and other various sheet metal modifications.
Role and Responsibilities
- MUST show up on time, follow safety and cleanliness protocols, and regulations per the jobsite foreman/manager.
- Assist with and perform inspections and repairs on fire/smoke dampers in compliance with the NPFA 90A, NFPA 80, & NFPA 105 standards and in accordance with AFG’s Training Methods and Procedures Manual.
- Installing new fire/smoke dampers, installing sheet metal access doors, and other ductwork related modifications.
- Misc. maintenance work including minor masonry repairs, fire stopping, cleaning, etc., as needed.
- Maintaining jobsite inventory of supplies, site tools and equipment.
- Provide accurate and complete documentation of prior conditions and work performed for customer reporting using phone/tablet.
- Maintain professional and timely communication with customers and AFG management.
Job Requirements
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be self-motivated and possess the ability to perform work throughout a facility self-directed which includes communication with customers and staff.
- Maintain a professional appearance which includes consistent on-time arrival at job sites.
- Administer proper infectious control measures as per hospital requirements when performing inspections and repairs.
- Demonstrate ability to read, follow, and label Life Safety Plans/Drawings.
- Capable of aligning work schedule with the on-site need for tools and materials, which includes unloading and loading of these materials and tools, and any other necessary equipment.
- Some knowledge of computer software preferred (Microsoft Word & Excel, Email, and Adobe Acrobat).
- Efficient with smartphones, tablets, computers, and chosen applications for daily reporting.
- 20% out-of-town travel required (30+ miles)
Additional Requirements
- Valid driver license with an acceptable driving record.
- Reliable Vehicle to get to various jobsites.
- Preferred construction experience with basic tools.
- Must be comfortable working in healthcare settings such as hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:
- 8:00am – 4:00pm regular work hours at jobsites throughout NYC & Long Island
- The employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs & ladders; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear.
- Employee is required to spend 50% or more of time climbing and using various ladders.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds independently.
- Working extended hours which includes evenings and weekends (compensation provided).

Pay: $20.00 - $27.00 per hour
