Job Summary:
The Rubber Mold Designer is responsible for designing high-precision molds for rubber compression molding and related processes, including advanced manufacturing techniques like 3D-printed tooling. This role involves supporting technical issues, driving tooling enhancements, and collaborating with internal teams in a fast-paced production environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Handle all aspects of mold design, ensuring specifications and quality standards are met.
- Communicate directly with tool maker, meetings, and presentations to define their needs and provide project updates.
- Analyze sketches, specifications, and drawings to determine design factors such as dimensions, clearances, tolerances, and material properties.
- Create and refine detailed mold designs using computer-aided design (CAD) software.
- Coordinate design reviews and facilitate technical discussions with internal teams.
- Support planning, manufacturing, assembly, quality, and production teams to ensure designs are accurate, practical, and efficient.
- Sketch rough layouts and compute angles, weights, radii, and dimensions as part of the design process.
- Evaluate problems, implement design changes, and approve final specifications and drawing releases.
- Calculate tolerance stack-ups to ensure design fit and functionality.
- Work on multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines and customer requirements.
- Organize and archive both electronic and paper documents related to design work.
- Stay informed on industry trends, materials, and emerging technologies, such as 3D printing and additive manufacturing, to incorporate innovative solutions into tooling designs.
Experience
- Degree or certificate from recognized CAD training facility
- 5 yrs. experience in designing and detailing molds.
- Proven experience in plastics or Rubber injection molding within a factory setting is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with project scheduling tools and techniques.
- Experience working in a manufacturing facility, with knowledge of assembly processes preferred.
- Strong understanding of lean manufacturing methodologies and their application in product design.
- Ability to interpret complex schematics and technical documentation effectively.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
- In-depth knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in CAD design and documentation control.
- Self-directed and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Strong communication skills for effective interaction with customers and cross-functional teams.
- Essential attributes include professionalism, a commitment to confidentiality, and the ability to work independently.
Work Environment:
- Regularly works in a clean, quiet, and climate-controlled office environment.
- Occasionally provides support in problem-solving within production and tool-making areas.
- May be required to work outside regular hours occasionally to ensure timely delivery of designs and products.
- Protective eyewear is required when entering production areas for safety reasons.
