The Security Officer supports the Port of Galveston by maintaining a safe, secure, and customer-focused environment across marine terminal facilities. The role performs access control, monitors assigned areas, conducts proactive rounds, and reports irregularities in alignment with Port procedures and the Port’s security framework, including TWIC verification, MARSEC posture, and Facility Security Plan (FSP) requirements. Officers ensure a positive guest and stakeholder experience while upholding safety, professionalism, and operational readiness.
Key Responsibilities
Security & Access Control
- Perform access control duties at checkpoints, gates, and designated locations; verify TWIC, port IDs, and visitor credentials in accordance with Port expectations and established procedures.
- Monitor pedestrian and vehicular flow and maintain a visible security presence to deter hazards, unsafe behavior, or unauthorized activity.
- Maintain awareness of MARSEC level changes and carry out assigned duties consistent with the Port’s security posture.
- Conduct assigned patrols/rounds to ensure doors, access points, and restricted areas remain secure.
- Observe and report suspicious activity, hazards, or security deficiencies promptly to a Supervisor or designated Port representative.
Customer Service & Communication
- Provide courteous, professional assistance to passengers, crew, contractors, terminal staff, and Port stakeholders.
- Give clear verbal instructions both in person and over radio/VHF communications.
- Direct inquiries, complaints, or concerns to the appropriate Supervisor when needed.
Incident Response & Reporting
- Respond calmly and appropriately to routine incidents, medical situations, elevator entrapments, spills, or other on-site events following established procedures.
- Complete daily activity logs and incident reports using company and Port-approved formats; submit reports before end of shift and within all required timelines.
- Support emergency drills and exercises conducted by the Port in accordance with established practices.
Operational & Conduct Requirements
- Maintain professional appearance, punctuality, integrity, and alertness at all times.
- Remain attentive to surroundings and avoid any personal business except during authorized breaks.
- Follow all safety guidelines, PPE requirements, and environmental/health policies while on Port property.
- Adhere to post orders, Supervisor direction, and all documented procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Valid TWIC card or ability to obtain within required timeframe.
- Valid Texas Non-Commissioned Security Officer License (or ability to obtain/maintain).
- Ability to stand, walk, and work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather.
- Ability to lift/push/pull up to 20 pounds.
- Clear written communication skills for accurate report writing.
- Ability to pass pre-employment background check and drug screening.
Training Requirements
TSS provides all required training prior to assignment.
Officers receive:
- Company and Port orientation
- MTSA-aligned security awareness training (per Port expectations)
- Customer service & conflict-resolution training
- Basic emergency response procedures
- Traffic direction fundamentals
- Annual refresher training (minimum 16 hours), including report writing, customer service, and de-escalation topics
Work Environment & Schedule
- Marine terminal setting with indoor/outdoor posts.
- Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and flexible shifts based on vessel schedules.
- Officers may not work more than two consecutive shifts and must receive required rest periods per company standards.
