Job Summary:
The Grinder works alongside structural welders to prepare, finish, and clean metal components used in the fabrication and assembly of structural steel. This position is responsible for grinding welds, preparing surfaces, removing slag and imperfections, and ensuring fabricated parts meet quality standards. The Grinder also assists welders with material handling, fit-up preparation, and maintaining a safe and organized work environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Grind, smooth, and finish welds using hand grinders and other power tools.
- Remove slag, spatter, burrs, and other surface imperfections from welded assemblies.
- Prepare metal surfaces for welding, painting, or coating.
- Assist structural welders with material setup, fit-up, and positioning of steel components.
- Operate hand tools, grinders, wire wheels, and other fabrication equipment safely.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and safe condition.
- Follow all company safety policies, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Perform other duties as assigned to support fabrication operations.
Experience
- Proven experience in fabrication shop environments with a strong background in metal fabrication and mechanical assembly.
- Hands-on experience with construction sites or industrial settings involving pipe threading, ductwork installation, or structural assembly.
- Skilled in interpreting mechanical blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings with a solid understanding of shop math.
- Knowledge of ASME codes & standards, AWS welding standards, and general manufacturing practices.
- Familiarity with the use of rigging gear, forklifts, machining tools, plasma cutters, press brakes, and gas metal arc welding processes.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team in fast-paced environments requiring attention to detail and precision.
- Basic math skills necessary for measurements, calculations, and quality control checks.
