Food Service Substitute
Pay Range (FY 26 Non-Union)
$18.38 – $21.61 per hour
Position Overview
As a Food Service Substitute, you will assist the Kitchen Manager in providing healthy and nutritious school lunches that meet all state and federal requirements for approved school lunch and à la carte menu programs. This role supports the delivery of high-quality food service to students across RSU 21.
Reports To: Food Service Supervisor
Qualifications
The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, and committed to providing nutritious meals to students in a safe and efficient kitchen environment.
- High school diploma or GED required
- Sanitation certification required
- Minimum two years of food service experience
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to meet physical demands of the position
- Valid DOE fingerprinting certification required
Responsibilities
Operational Excellence
- Maintain high standards of safety, cleanliness, and sanitation in the kitchen
- Follow district policies, procedures, schedules, and program requirements
- Prepare food according to planned menus and standardized recipes
- Ensure quality of food in flavor, appearance, and presentation prior to service
- Record food requisitions and meal counts accurately
- Maintain accurate monthly inventory of food and supplies
- Verify and sign invoices after confirming delivered orders
Collaboration
- Build positive relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public
- Coordinate weekly supply orders through the Kitchen Manager
- Report food quality concerns or delivery issues to the Kitchen Manager
- Report kitchen or cafeteria issues promptly to the Kitchen Manager
- Participate in daily cleaning and sanitation of kitchen equipment and utensils
- Support special meal functions and related food service duties
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Kitchen Manager or Food Services Director

Terms of Employment
School year position. Salary to be established by the Board of School Directors.
Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board policy governing evaluation of support services personnel.
