Job Overview
The Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) / Licensed Midwife (LM) / Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) provides comprehensive, relationship-centered, physiologic birth care across the continuum of pregnancy, labor, birth, and the postpartum period. This role is grounded in the midwifery model of care, emphasizing informed choice, shared decision-making, and the promotion of safe, low-intervention birth in a birth center setting.
The midwife is responsible for clinical excellence, patient safety, and the delivery of compassionate, individualized care while supporting families through one of the most transformative experiences of their lives. Care extends from initial prenatal consultation through at least six (6) weeks postpartum, with a focus on optimizing maternal and newborn outcomes.
Clinical Responsibilities
Prenatal Care
- Conduct comprehensive initial and ongoing prenatal assessments
- Monitor maternal health, fetal growth, and fetal well-being
- Order, perform, and interpret routine and indicated laboratory testing
- Identify risk factors and determine appropriateness for out-of-hospital birth
- Provide individualized education on nutrition, lifestyle, childbirth preparation, and informed consent
- Develop and maintain individualized care plans in collaboration with patients
Labor & Birth Care
- Serve as primary midwife during labor and delivery in the birth center setting
- Monitor maternal and fetal status using appropriate clinical assessment tools
- Support physiologic labor and employ non-pharmacologic comfort measures
- Perform clinical interventions within scope and regulatory guidelines
- Recognize deviations from normal and initiate appropriate management or transfer
- Coordinate and execute safe, timely transfers of care when indicated, including hospital accompaniment and continuity of support
Postpartum & Newborn Care
- Provide immediate postpartum care for mother and newborn
- Conduct ongoing postpartum assessments through at least six (6) weeks
- Perform newborn assessments within scope of practice
- Support breastfeeding initiation and continuation
- Identify and manage common postpartum and newborn concerns
- Provide education on newborn care, maternal recovery, and family adjustment
General Clinical Duties
- Provide emotional, psychological, and culturally sensitive support to patients and families
- Maintain clear, timely communication with patients between visits
- Deliver care via telehealth when appropriate
- Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant clinical documentation
- Participate in quality improvement and safety initiatives
- Collaborate with consulting physicians, specialists, and healthcare partners as needed
Administrative & Leadership Responsibilities
- Participate in team meetings, QAPI initiatives, and clinical reviews
- Contribute to development and refinement of clinical policies and protocols
- Support a culture of safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement
- Mentor and support student midwives and junior staff
- Assist in maintaining readiness of clinical spaces, equipment, and supplies
Experience & Education Requirements
- Licensed Midwife (LM) or Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) in Wisconsin
- NARM-approved preceptor (or willingness to obtain)
- 1–3 years of clinical midwifery experience preferred or 2+ years of labor & delivery experience preferred; new graduates encouraged to apply
- Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
- Current CPR/BLS certification
- Strong clinical judgment and ability to work autonomously
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and patient education skills
Location Requirements
- Must reside within or be willing to relocate within 30 minutes of the birth center to support on-call responsibilities
Physical Requirements
- Ability to move freely (standing, walking, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling)
- Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds without assistance
- Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and bodily fluids
- Manual dexterity and coordination to perform clinical procedures
