Job Title: NOLA Legal Assistant
Department: NOLA Team
Reports To: Supervising Attorney
Position Details: Full Time; (40 hours/work week); Hourly; Nonexempt
Overall Descriptions of the Position:
Legal assistants will assist attorneys and paralegals with all tasks pertaining to the litigation work up of cases. Will be responsible for saving documents, answering client questions, data entry, calendaring case deadlines, and other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to learn computer software quickly
- Self-motivated and well-organized
- Punctual and predictable attendance
- Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent Typing skills and Computer Literacy
- Knowledge of legal terms and processes
- Prior experience in legal language and writing.
- Preferred: Prior experience of state and federal court e-filing systems
- Preferred: Customer service and/or administrative experience
- Job duties must be regularly performed in the office
Position Duties (including, but not limited to):
- Prepare, collect, and distribute to/receive from clients various documents, including: settlement releases; waivers & consents, contingency fee agreements, etc.
- Schedule and set-up depositions, including preparing notices
- Draft, format, and distribute basic discovery
- Contact courts regarding cases, as necessary
- Prepare affidavits or other documents, such as legal correspondence
- Contact client regarding cases, as necessary
- Calendar deadlines for case deadlines
- Save documents and case information in our electronic document and client management systems
- Paper and E-filing with court
- Gather data from various filings and input data into several databases
- Save documents from various sources and extract information from these materials
- Organize work tasks in a sequential and detail-oriented fashion to prevent missed deadlines, and catch spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors
- Communicate clearly and effectively with coworkers and other team members
- Maintain and coordinate office supplies
Education, Certificates and Licenses:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Must be able to pass pre-employment background check.
