About Us
We are a multi-generational, family-owned enterprise with a diverse and entrepreneurial portfolio. Our operations include two U.S. bottling plants, a condiment and seasonings company based in Jamaica, West Indies (which sells locally and through U.S. distributors), several real estate holding entities, diverse investments, and a gas station in Brooklyn, NY. Our bottling plants and our Jamaican company each maintain their own in-house accounting teams. As part of a broader effort to build out our corporate infrastructure, with a specific focus on our family office, we are now creating a dedicated accounting function for our real estate, investment, and retail entities.
Position Overview
This is not a pure bookkeeping role. We are looking for an experienced staff accountant — someone with a genuine appetite for operational involvement and project management, not just transactional recordkeeping — to own the accounting for our real estate holding entities, our investment portfolio, and our gas station business. This is a newly created, standalone role — you will be the first dedicated accounting hire for these entities, working directly with our CEO and CLO to build the processes, systems, and reporting cadence from the ground up. We do not currently have an in-house accountant for these entities, so this is a true “foundation-building” opportunity for someone who enjoys ownership and structure-building rather than stepping into an already-established function.
This role is initially a solo-contributor position with no direct reports. Once we hire a Chief Financial Officer, this position will report into the CFO; until then, you will report jointly to our CEO and Chief Legal Officer and will be expected to take ownership of ad hoc projects — financial and operational — assigned by leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Own full-cycle accounting for multiple real estate holding entities, our investment holdings, and our Brooklyn gas station, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank and credit card reconciliations, and general ledger maintenance.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow) for each entity.
- Track rent rolls, lease terms, property-level expenses, and other real estate-specific financial detail in coordination with our Executive Admin staff.
- Maintain recordkeeping and reporting for the family's investment holdings, including tracking capital activity, statements, and performance summaries across accounts.
- Manage day-to-day accounting for gas station operations, including fuel and merchandise sales reconciliation, vendor payments, and inventory-related entries.
- Coordinate with outside CPAs/tax preparers on tax filings, 1099s, and annual tax packages for each entity.
- Design, document, and continuously improve accounting processes and internal controls across the real estate, investment, and retail entities — much of this infrastructure does not yet exist and will need to be built.
- Maintain organized, audit-ready financial records and files for each legal entity.
- Prepare ad hoc financial analysis, budgets, and reporting for the CEO and CLO as needed.
- Take ownership of operational and cross-functional projects assigned by the CEO — for example, vendor or systems transitions, process redesign, or new-entity onboarding — acting as project lead rather than purely a support function.
- Partner with the accounting teams at our bottling plants and Jamaican affiliate as needed for cross-entity reporting or consolidated views.
Qualifications
- 5–8+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally including staff accountant responsibilities as well as exposure to accounting-manager-level judgment and multi-entity ownership.
- Experience with real estate accounting (property-level financials, rent rolls, lease accounting) strongly preferred.
- Experience with investment accounting/recordkeeping and/or small business or retail/gas station accounting a plus.
- Proficiency with QuickBooks (or similar accounting software) required.
- Strong Excel skills and comfort working with financial data across multiple legal entities.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred; CPA or CPA-track a plus but not required.
- A genuine appetite for operational involvement and project management — this role is intentionally broader than a traditional staff accountant or bookkeeping position, and candidates who only want transactional accounting work are unlikely to be satisfied in this seat.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize across multiple entities, and build processes without significant existing infrastructure.
- Entrepreneurial mindset — genuinely energized by “foundation-building” work, comfortable with ambiguity, and willing to take ownership of projects outside a narrow job description.
- Excellent judgment, discretion, and communication skills, given direct reporting relationship with the CEO and CLO of a family-owned business.
- Willingness to work from either our Milton, NY or Manhattan (UES) office.
What Makes Someone a Great Fit
This role is best suited to a staff accountant who wants more than a routine accounting job — someone who enjoys being handed a blank slate and building the right processes, reporting, and controls from scratch, and who is just as energized by operational and project work as by the accounting itself. You should be comfortable being the only person in this seat, motivated by ownership rather than oversight, and excited by the idea of helping a growing, multi-faceted family business — and its family office — professionalize its financial and operational infrastructure.
