Who We Are -
At Cadre, we're more than a CPA firm. We're a team of professionals who care deeply about helping our clients and each other succeed. We believe careers should be both challenging and rewarding, and we're committed to an environment where people can grow, contribute, and thrive. Our size means you'll gain broad exposure across industries rather than getting siloed into one narrow specialty, and you'll take on real client responsibility along the way. We're also investing in modern workflow tools, including SurePrep/1040SCAN, UltraTax (Thomson Reuters), and SafeSend for return delivery and e-signature, to cut down on manual data entry so our people can spend their time on the work that actually requires judgment: reviewing numbers, communicating with clients, and getting returns right.
Who We're Looking For -
This is a generalist role, and the right person is as comfortable cleaning up a trial balance and booking journal entries as they are preparing the return itself. You'll work closely with the reviewing CPA, take on engagements with light direction, and build the kind of track record where your work gets signed off on the first pass. Your job is to use your accounting foundation to get a client's records to a clean, tax-return ready state and prepare the return itself.
The honest truth about this role: we can teach tax prep. What we can't easily teach is solid accounting instinct, being able to look at debits and credits and know when something makes sense and when it doesn't. If you have that foundation, we'll train you on the rest.
This is also a year-round, full-time position, not a seasonal tax-only role. You'll focus on tax preparation during busy season, then shift to accounting and bookkeeping work the rest of the year.
What You'll Do -
During busy season, tax preparation:
- Take over a client's SurePrep/1040SCAN binder after initial scanning and non-technical proofreading are complete.
- Match each source document to the correct tax form or activity (for example, tying a 1099-MISC to the right Schedule C or E).
- Resolve duplicate or superseded documents and confirm whether a document represents a new activity or ties to an existing one.
- Organize anything that didn't auto-file into the binder and identify items still missing compared to last year's return.
- Enter asset, depreciation, and depletion data directly in UltraTax, then export the binder and prepare the return (1040, 1120, 1120S, and similar).
- Communicate directly with clients to gather documents, ask follow-up questions, and resolve open items.
- Hand completed returns back to the reviewing CPA in “ready for review” condition, flagging anything that looks unusual.
- Deliver finalized returns to clients through SafeSend and track e-signature completion.
The rest of the year, accounting and bookkeeping:
- Take a client's QuickBooks (or other bookkeeping) file and get the trial balance cleaned up and tax return ready.
- Perform account reconciliations, including bank, credit card, and loan accounts.
- Book journal entries, including depreciation calculations and other standard adjusting entries.
- Handle write-up and bookkeeping work as needed to get an engagement to a tax-return-ready trial balance.
- Assist with client reviews.
What You Bring -
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
- 3 to 5 years of experience in a public accounting firm setting.
- Strong general accounting instinct, able to look at debits and credits and recognize when something doesn't make sense. This is the one thing we can't easily train.
- Prior tax return preparation experience is a plus, but not required. If you have the accounting foundation, we'll train you on tax prep and our tools.
- Comfortable learning and working within tax and accounting software, including SurePrep/1040SCAN, UltraTax (Thomson Reuters), SafeSend, and QuickBooks; strong general ease with technology.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for direct client contact.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines during busy season.
- CPA license not required; CPA-eligible or CPA candidates are welcome to apply.
- Prior experience with UltraTax or another Thomson Reuters product is a plus; we are an UltraTax shop firmwide.
What Success Looks Like -
- Returns move through SurePrep cleanly, with minimal back-and-forth before they're review-ready.
- Accounting/Tax data are completed accurately when handed off to the reviewing CPA.
- Clients trust your communication and follow-through on open items.
- You take on engagements with light direction and the reviewing CPA has confidence handing you the next one.
