Job Description:
A Diesel Mechanic is responsible for performing maintenance, repairs, and diagnostics on a variety of heavy machinery used in construction and other industrial sectors. The role requires a deep understanding of mechanical systems, hydraulics, electrical systems, and engine components. Heavy Equipment Mechanics ensure equipment is running efficiently, safely, and in compliance with regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Maintenance & Repairs:
- Perform routine maintenance tasks, including oil changes, filter replacements, and inspections.
- Repair and replace faulty components such as engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and electrical wiring.
- Diagnose mechanical issues using diagnostic tools and equipment.
- Perform repairs on-site or in a workshop environment.
Inspection & Diagnosis:
- Conduct thorough inspections of equipment to identify potential issues or wear and tear.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems using manuals, schematics, and diagnostic tools.
- Record maintenance and repair activities, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
Safety & Compliance:
- Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations when performing maintenance and repair tasks.
- Ensure that equipment meets safety standards set by regulatory bodies.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintain a safe working environment.
Required Qualifications:
Education/Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of an apprenticeship or technical training in heavy equipment mechanics.
- At least 2-5 years of hands-on experience working with heavy machinery.
- Valid driver’s license.
Skills & Knowledge:
- Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing a wide range of heavy equipment, including bulldozers, backhoes, excavators, cranes, and more.
- In-depth knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, transmissions, and electrical systems.
- Familiarity with various diagnostic tools and software.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
Working Conditions:
- Work may take place on job sites, in outdoor environments, or in a workshop.
- Hours may vary, and on-call or overtime work may be required, depending on the urgency of repairs.
