Job Title: Network Engineer

Reports To: Director of Engineering
The Network Engineer plays a critical role in designing, implementing, and maintaining Cal.net’s network infrastructure to ensure high performance, scalability, and reliability. This role partners closely with the NOC, field operations, and technical support teams to proactively improve network performance and quickly resolve complex issues. The Network Engineer is responsible for advancing the network architecture, driving automation and process improvements, and supporting the organization’s mission of delivering exceptional internet service—especially in hard-to-serve areas.
This is a full-time position that will include participation in an on-call rotation to support network incidents and escalations.
Focus:

Design, deploy, and maintain network infrastructure including IP routing, switching, and fixed wireless systems.

Lead network architecture initiatives, including expansion, upgrades, and optimization of ISP and backbone networks.

Troubleshoot complex network issues and provide escalation support to the NOC, Technical Support, and Field Operations teams.

Analyze network performance and implement proactive improvements to ensure uptime, resiliency, and scalability.

Develop and maintain network documentation, diagrams, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Implement monitoring, alerting, and automation tools to improve visibility and operational efficiency.

Participate in vendor evaluations, technology testing, and deployment of new solutions.

Drive continuous improvement initiatives to reduce downtime, improve customer experience, and streamline operations.
Skill Set:
-
3–7+ years of experience in network engineering or advanced network operations.

Strong knowledge of IP networking, including TCP/IP, routing protocols (BGP, OSPF), VLANs, and switching.

Experience with ISP or telecom network environments, including backbone, aggregation, and access networks.

Proficiency with network troubleshooting tools and methodologies (packet capture, latency analysis, etc.).

Familiarity with network monitoring and management platforms.

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and documentation skills.

Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across technical and non-technical teams.
Preferred Experience, Education & Certifications:

ISP/Telecom Network Engineering experience

Experience with wireless technologies (e.g., Cambium, fixed wireless systems)

Knowledge of automation/scripting (Python, Ansible, or similar)

Nokia Network Routing Specialist Certification (or equivalent)

Cisco CCNP / JNCIP or higher certification

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Networking, or related field (or equivalent experience)
Compensation & Benefits:

$80,000 - $120,000 annually based upon experience
