East Providence Public Library
The East Providence Public Library seeks a detail-oriented Digitization Specialist to assist with a grant-funded local history digitization project. Working under the supervision of the Public Services Librarian, the Digitization Specialist will digitize and process historically and genealogically significant materials for public access and preservation.
This position offers an excellent opportunity for a current MLIS student, recent graduate, or library staff member with experience in digitization projects who is interested in archives, local history, digital collections, and preservation.
Responsibilities
The Digitization Specialist will perform duties including, but not limited to:
● Digitizing historical materials using specialized scanning equipment: CZUR ET24 Pro Book and Document Camera, and Wolverine Titan Slide and Negative Scanner
● Processing yearbooks, maps, photographs, and documents related to historic properties, businesses, schools, and individuals in East Providence
● Implementing imaging workflows, including making consistent, informed technical decisions regarding lighting setup, image quality, quality control, and file management
● Naming digital files according to established naming conventions
● Conducting quality control reviews to ensure the accuracy, completeness, and clarity of digital images
● Organizing and managing digital files
● Performing other project-related duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education and Experience
● High school diploma or equivalent
● Experience in digitizing materials using specialized scanning equipment
● Experience with archival projects
● Experience in creating metadata descriptions, such as Dublin Core
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
● Experience working with scanning equipment and image-editing software
● Familiarity with standards and best practices for the care and handling of fragile and historical materials
● Experience with digitization projects, digital collections, or local history materials
● Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
● Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
● Availability to work during regular library operating hours
Compensation & Term
● This is a short-term, grant-funded project position
● Hourly rate: $25–$30 per hour, depending on experience
● Total hours: approximately 60–75 hours
