Position Summary
The HIM Specialist is responsible for processing requests for medical records and itemized bill copies in a timely and efficient manner consistent with the hospital’s mission, Vision, and ICARE values. The HIM Specialist safeguards and protects the patient's right to privacy by validating written authorizations ensuring that only authorized individuals obtain medical records and other protected health information (PHI) with proper authorization, as outline by Health Information Management Department policies, HIPAA, Federal and State Statutes.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Must be able to demonstrate compassion and understanding to patient situations and be able to communicate effectively with patients and their families
Must be able to prioritize workload and job assignments efficiently and in a timely manner
Responsible for compiling, processing, maintaining and releasing records of patients in a manner consistent with medical and regulatory requirements.
Review of records for accuracy and completeness before release
Performs release of information requests
Protects the security of medical records to ensure that confidentiality is maintained
Maintain daily workflow, ensuring that queues are managed, records are scanned in a timely manner and assist in any area there is a backlog
Must be comfortable identifying important patient information to update the patient record
Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills; ability to be flexible and adapt to changing priorities
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
Must have knowledge of HIPAA to protect patient medical records and health information
Dedicated to working with people of various educational and socioeconomic backgrounds

Education/Experience
High School Diploma equivalent required
Healthcare experience preferred
Knowledge of medical terminology preferred
Cerner experience preferred
Proficient in Microsoft Office
Strong Communication skills required, both orally and in writing
