Position Overview
The Apprentice Appraiser/Business Personal Property is an entry-level position responsible for providing administrative, clerical, customer service, and appraisal support to the Business Personal Property Department. Under the direct supervision of the Business Personal Property Administrator and Assistant Administrator, the Apprentice Appraiser assists with identifying businesses, maintaining business personal property accounts, processing taxpayer filings, conducting field inspections, and supporting the department with any additional assigned duties.
This position serves as one of the primary points of contact for business owners, accountants, attorneys, tax representatives, and the public regarding Business Personal Property reporting requirements, assessment procedures, and other related inquiries. The Apprentice Appraiser develops the knowledge and skills necessary to perform business personal property appraisal duties while completing the required Alabama Department of Revenue certification program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Serve as a primary point of contact for business owners, tax representatives, and the public regarding Business Personal Property filings, reporting requirements, and assessment procedures.
Answer, and direct calls, emails, and walk-ins to the appropriate personnel.
Learn appraisal principles, auditing procedures, and valuation methods through on- the-job training and required coursework.
Identify businesses operating within the taxing jurisdiction using appraisal records, business licenses, sales tax accounts, media sources, online research and field canvassing.
Assist in developing and maintaining a complete and accurate listing of all business personal property accounts.
Maintain organized, accurate, and confidential taxpayer information in accordance with departmental policies and state laws.
Assist senior appraisal personnel in processing renditions.
Monitor filing deadlines and assist with tracking outstanding renditions and correspondence.
Assist senior appraisal personnel with on-site inspections of business assets.
Support appraisal department with daily administrative and operational tasks.
Education and Experience
Education and Experience
Minimum two years of college coursework in business administration, accounting, taxation, law, property valuation or related fields.
Associate Degree preferred
Equivalent combination of education, appraisal training, or closely related experience may be considered in lieu of college education.
Must have a valid driver's license.
Knowledge, Skill, and Ability
Proficient with computers, databases and standard office software (Microsoft Word and Excel).
Working knowledge of accounting and auditing principles and financial recordkeeping.
Ability to analyze financial data and detect reporting errors or inconsistencies.
Ability to read, understand, and apply legal documents, state and federal laws, regulations, and court decisions.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to build and maintain professional working relationships with taxpayers, coworkers, and government officials.
Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team.

Work Conditions & Physical Requirements
An Apprentice Appraiser will be required to work outdoors as well as in office conditions.
Should have the ability to sit or stand for long periods.
Must be willing to travel to complete educational requirements and any continuing education that may be expected.

8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Monday - Friday
