Summary
The Librarian provides professional assistance to patrons of all ages including advanced reference services, technology support and instruction, outreach, and program planning and implementation. May exercise functional and technical supervision of, or responsibility for, the daily operation of a library service area for one or more branches.
What you will do:
- Responsible for planning and administration of large-scale projects and systemwide initiatives
- Plan, implement, and evaluate programs of interest for children, teens, and/or adults.
- Develop and maintain effective partnerships with various community organizations and groups to provide or coordinate programs, events, training, and services to targeted user groups.
- Promote library use, programs/events, and services through a variety of means.
- Stay up to date with current trends, technologies ,and best practices in library services.
- Provide a variety of library services to patrons of all ages using advanced knowledge of library policies, procedures and best practices.These include, but are not limited to reference services, information assistance, readers' advisory, technology support and instruction, circulation, and clerical or technical library support tasks.
- Inform patrons of library policies and procedures. Address concerns or violations in a positive manner.
- Provide training and guidance to new and current staff as needed.
- Collect statistics, prepare reports, and make recommendations on specific areas of library service.
- Write or participate in grant writing for needed materials, services or programs.
- Participate in meetings/training and serve on work committees.
Minimum Qualifications
- A Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) from an accredited school or currently enrolled in a MLS/MLIS program and are scheduled to graduate by the end of the current semester.
- At least one year experience in a public library or equivalent experience.
- Leadership characteristics including initiative, innovative and visionary thinking, willingness to take on responsibilities, adaptability, problem solving, decision making, and positive role modeling behaviors.
- Display a willingness to assume and visibly demonstrate mentoring and coaching, role modeling and leadership to staff members by recognizing and developing talent.
- Strong customer service, organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative team environment.
- Ability to exercise tact, diplomacy, cultural sensitivity, and courtesy when dealing with patrons and staff.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to operate and perform basic troubleshooting of technology, office equipment, and computer systems including hardware and software (e.g. Google applications, electronic databases, email, and internet).
- Knowledge of public library policies and procedures; of library acquisition, cataloging, classification, and processing procedures; of the theories and practices of collection development; of the principles of intellectual freedom and the Library Bill of Rights; of the theory and practice of reference service; including basic reference sources; of child/human development and theories of child and adult learning behaviors.
- Must be able to work at least one evening a week and some Saturdays.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
- Will work in a general library environment where subjected to working around others and occasionally independently, working mainly inside (with some outdoor activities), and a moderate noise level.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds, and push/pull loaded carts of library materials.
- Requires sufficient dexterity to operate office, computer, or other technical equipment.
- Ability to hear and speak clearly and must have visual acuity to distinguish letters, words, and numbers as needed.
- Will regularly walk, stand, sit, reach and grasp and occasionally stoop, bend or kneel throughout the workday.
