Job Description – Tax Manager
We are seeking an experienced Tax Manager specializing in tax credits and incentives to lead the technical delivery, advisory, and quality of our client engagements.
The Tax Manager owns the technical positions and defensibility of the work we deliver. You will guide executive stakeholders through complex tax credit opportunities, ensure documentation is audit-ready, and mentor team members to elevate the firm’s quality standards.
This role operates at the intersection of technical tax expertise, client advisory, and operational improvement. You will work directly with CFOs, CEOs, and finance leaders to translate complex tax law into strategic business outcomes.
In this position, you will:
- Design and defend tax credit positions and technical conclusions
- Ensure calculations, workpapers, and deliverables meet audit-ready standards
- Lead executive-level conversations with client leadership
- Identify expansion opportunities within client accounts
- Mentor team members and improve documentation quality
- Contribute to internal systems, playbooks, and methodologies that strengthen the firm

In the first 90 days, you will conquer the following:
Within your first 90 days, your focus will be on learning HITO’s systems while taking ownership of key client work. You will:
- Learn HITO’s methodologies, SOPs, and deliverable standards
- Take ownership of a portfolio of client engagements or defined portions of larger engagements
- Establish documentation expectations with both clients and internal teams
- Review and approve R&D tax credit workpapers, calculations, and technical narratives
- Ensure workpapers properly tie out to supporting financial records such as general ledger, payroll data, invoices, and financial statements
- Confirm documentation is complete, consistent, and defensible
- Meet client and governmental deadlines for filings and deliverables
- Proactively identify risks, bottlenecks, or documentation gaps
- Communicate effectively with team members to ensure project alignment
- Participate in internal debriefs to review wins, challenges, and improvement opportunities
- Begin mentoring team members to improve documentation quality and confidence
In the first 6 months, you will conquer the following:
By the six-month mark, you will be operating as a trusted leader for both clients and internal teams. You will:
- Lead technical delivery and advisory for your client portfolio with minimal supervision
- Conduct executive-level discussions translating tax positions into business impact and next steps
- Improve documentation speed while maintaining high-quality, audit-ready standards
- Identify process improvements that strengthen delivery consistency and efficiency
- Build at least one reusable asset such as a playbook, template, or training resource
- Identify opportunities to expand services within existing client accounts
- Collaborate with leadership to scope and evaluate expansion opportunities
- Strengthen quality control systems to reduce rework and improve defensibility across engagements
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 10+ years of professional experience in public tax accounting or tax consulting
- 6+ years of experience working with R&D tax credits and other tax incentives
- Strong knowledge of U.S. tax laws and regulations related to credits and incentives
- Demonstrated experience performing tax research using tools such as CCH, BNA, or Checkpoint
- Experience supporting IRS or state tax audits, including responding to IDRs and preparing documentation packages
- CPA license preferred (EA or JD may be acceptable depending on representation scope)
- Ability to analyze financial statements and connect tax positions to underlying records
- Experience managing multiple client engagements simultaneously
- Experience coaching or mentoring team members
