The City of St. Clair is currently accepting applications for the position of a Public Works Maintenance Worker. The maintenance worker performs various tasks and is responsible for maintaining the City’s streets and storm sewer system, water system, parks, buildings, and other City properties to support the functions of the Public Works department. Minimum qualifications: Must possess a high school diploma or GED. Experience in a work environment that operates various vehicles and equipment (including heavy equipment), general maintenance, and basic mechanical skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Experience in equipment operation (including heavy equipment) with basic mechanical skills relating to the maintenance of vehicles, equipment and property.
- Must have the ability to respond to the location of an alarm call (in city limits) within 30 minutes.
- Physically able, on a daily basis, to bend, walk, climb, and lift/carry up to 80 lbs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- As directed by the Public Works Supervisor, performs daily checks (monitoring, charting, recording and observing) on equipment in connection with Water Treatment Facility, water tower, wells, Wastewater Treatment Plant and Lift Stations. Such daily checks shall include weekends and holidays.
- Serve on an on-call rotation of every other weekend.
- Assist the Public Works Supervisor in the inspection, upkeep, repair and preventative and corrective maintenance on the water and sewer systems as necessary to avoid service interruptions.
- Assist the Public Works Supervisor in the inspection, maintenance and repair of all water lines, sewer lines, valves and water hydrants throughout the City.
- As directed by the Public Works Supervisor install and repair water meters and flushes water/fire hydrants.
- Work (on occasion) longer hours as needed to meet emergency needs.
- Perform any other tasks as required, as directed by the Public Works Supervisor or as assigned by the City Council.
- Knowledge of equipment, machines and tools used on the job.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other employees, public officials and all members of the general public.
- Assist the Public Works Supervisor in the maintenance and upkeep of streets, alleys and parking lots (including snow plowing, snow removal and ice control/sanding), sidewalks, street signs, parks (including mowing), water lines, sewer lines, lift station and storm sewer lines.
- Assist the Public Works Supervisor in the maintenance and upkeep of all City owned equipment, buildings and property.
- Follow safe work practices when performing work for the City.
- Attend meetings, workshops and training opportunities relating to streets, parks, water, sewer, storm sewer, safety, etc. as directed by the Public Works Supervisor or as deemed necessary by the City Council.
- Attend City Council meetings and Public Hearings as directed by the Public Works Supervisor or as deemed necessary by the City Council.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs physical demands and work environment requirements for this position.
- Performs various preventative and corrective, maintenance services on city equipment and vehicles to insure safe and proper operation as well as longevity.
- Attendance during regularly scheduled work hours and outside regular hours as necessary.
- Effective and respectful communication and interactions with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organization and citizen customers.
- Performs other related functions as assigned or apparent.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Possess or obtain a valid Class D Minnesota Driver’s License.
- Must comply with organizational and departmental policies.
- Must comply with data practices policies and standards relative to not public data. Any access to not public data should be strictly limited to accessing the data that are necessary to fulfill the employment responsibility. While data are being accessed, incumbent should take reasonable measures to ensure the not public data are not accessed by individuals without a work reason. Once the work reason to access the data is reasonably finished the not public data must be properly stored according to city policy and the Minnesota Statutes.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- General knowledge of policies, practices and methods used in a municipal public works setting.
- Knowledge and skill to perform a wide variety of manual labor tasks, maintenance and repairs in all aspects relating to the general operations of a municipal Public Works Department.
- Knowledge and skill in operating light and heavy equipment, including but not limited to, truck with snowplow and sander, pay loader with 12’ plow blade, tractor, snow blower, power mower, chain saw, generators, pumps, motors, etc., as well as various shop equipment and hand tools.
- General knowledge of workplace safety precautions, programs and requirements.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees, elected officials and the general public.

o Frequently works outside.
o Exposure to adverse weather conditions and temperature extremes, as well as wet/humid conditions.
o Noise level varies greatly depending upon the nature of work being undertaken.

HOURS OF WORK
This is a full-time appointed position, requiring 40+ hours per week with attendance at meetings and functions outside of normal work hours to address the needs of the 24/7 operations of various city functions. The typical work hours for this position are 8:00 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.
