Position Summary
An Animal Care Assistant at Daya Urgent Veterinary Services plays a vital role in supporting patient care, maintaining hospital operations, and assisting the veterinary team. This position works closely with veterinarians, licensed veterinary technicians, and client service representatives to ensure patients receive compassionate care and the hospital remains clean, organized, and efficient.
The ideal candidate is dependable, compassionate, detail-oriented, and eager to learn in a fast-paced urgent care environment.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Clinical Support
- Safely restrain and handle dogs and cats of varying sizes and temperaments.
- Assist veterinary technicians and veterinarians with examinations, treatments, and procedures.
- Obtain patient vitals and assist with collecting patient histories.
- Prepare patients for examinations, treatments, diagnostics, and procedures.
- Monitor patient comfort and report changes in condition to the veterinary team.
- Assist with patient transportation throughout the hospital.
- Help maintain hospitalized patients by providing clean bedding, fresh water, appropriate feeding, and general comfort care as directed.
- Assist with cleaning and maintaining treatment areas between patients.
- Restock supplies and equipment throughout the hospital.
- Prepare laboratory samples for technician or veterinarian processing as directed.
- Support patient discharge preparation by gathering medications, supplies, and discharge materials.
Hospital Sanitation & Maintenance
- Clean and disinfect exam rooms, treatment areas, kennels, cages, and equipment according to hospital protocols.
- Maintain a clean and organized facility at all times.
- Launder hospital bedding, towels, and reusable patient care materials.
- Ensure proper disposal of medical waste, sharps containers, and biohazard materials.
- Assist with inventory organization and stocking of supplies.
Client Service & Communication
- Greet clients professionally and compassionately.
- Escort clients and patients when requested.
- Provide excellent customer service while maintaining professionalism and empathy.
- Assist with client education as directed by veterinarians or licensed veterinary technicians.
- Support client communication by relaying non-medical information and ensuring a positive client experience.
Safety, Compliance & Hospital Operations
- Follow all hospital protocols regarding patient safety, infection control, and workplace safety.
- Maintain confidentiality of client and patient information.
- Assist with opening and closing duties.
- Support teamwork by assisting colleagues and maintaining a positive attitude.
- Participate in training and continuing education opportunities.
- Help ensure the hospital remains organized, efficient, and prepared for daily operations.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience working with animals in a veterinary hospital, animal shelter, boarding facility, kennel, daycare, or similar environment preferred.
- Ability to safely handle and restrain animals.
- Strong work ethic and willingness to learn.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm and professional in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous veterinary assistant or animal care experience.
- Familiarity with veterinary terminology.
- Experience working in emergency, urgent care, or general practice settings.
Physical & Schedule Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and crouch for extended periods.
- Ability to work around animal dander, hair, cleaning chemicals, and medical equipment.
- Comfortable working with fearful, anxious, aggressive, or ill animals.
- Availability for weekends, evenings, and holiday shifts as required by urgent care operations.
- Hospital operating days are Friday through Monday.
