Setup Machinist / Process Engineer
Position Summary
The Setup Machinist / Process Engineer is responsible for developing, proving out, and optimizing machining processes while performing machine setups for CNC lathes, mills, and multi-axis machining centers. This role bridges manufacturing engineering and production by ensuring jobs are safely launched, meet quality requirements, achieve target cycle times, and are repeatable for production operators. The position plays a critical role in continuous improvement, tooling optimization, cost reduction, and employee training.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Interpret customer drawings, specifications, and GD&T requirements.
- Select machining methods, cutting tools, workholding, and inspection methods.
- Determine operation sequence to maximize efficiency and quality.
- Establish optimal cutting parameters including feeds, speeds, depths of cut, and coolant strategy.
- Design and document manufacturing processes and work instructions.
- Recommend tooling improvements to reduce cycle time and improve tool life.
- Set up CNC mills, lathes, horizontal machining centers, and multi-axis machines.
- Install fixtures, vises, chucks, jaws, tooling, probes, and accessories.
- Load and verify CNC programs.
- Set tool offsets and work offsets. .
- Make program edits and offset adjustments as required.
- Troubleshoot machining issues during setup and production.
- Validate cycle times against quotations and standards.
- Verify dimensional capability and repeatability.
- Assist operators with machining problems.
- Mentor Setup Technicians and CNC Operators.
- Support engineering changes and process improvements.
Required Skills
- Expert knowledge of CNC milling and turning operations.
- Ability to read complex engineering drawings.
- Proficiency in GD&T interpretation.
- Experience selecting carbide tooling and cutting parameters.
- Strong troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to optimize cycle times without sacrificing quality.
- Experience with precision measuring equipment.
Technical Qualifications
- 5+ years CNC setup experience.
- Experience with multi-axis CNC machining centers.
- Ability to edit CNC programs at the machine.
- Knowledge of G-code and M-code programming.
- Experience with fixture setup and workholding.
- Understanding of machining aluminum, alloy steels, stainless steels, tool steels, plastics, brass, and titanium.
- Familiarity with SPC and process capability.
