The HDD Locator is responsible for locating, marking, and monitoring underground utilities and the path of horizontal directional drilling operations. This role ensures the safety of personnel and equipment while preventing utility damage during construction projects.

Locate and mark existing underground utilities in accordance with project plans and local regulations

Use locating equipment such as DCI and Subsite.

Assist HDD operators by tracking bore path, monitoring drill head position, and providing realtime guidance

Communicate drill head location, depth, and deviation to the HDD operator

Record and document all utility markings, bore paths, and project data

Identify potential conflicts during prebore walk with existing utilities and notify supervisors for resolution

Maintain and calibrate locating equipment

Follow safety protocols including OSHA, DOT, and company procedures

Maintain accurate reports, logs, and asbuilt documentation

Work closely with HDD crews, survey teams, and project managers to ensure project efficiency and safety

Experience with utility locating or subsurface detection equipment such as DCI and subsite.

Familiarity with HDD operations and bore path tracking

Ability to read construction drawings, utility plans, and bore logs

Strong attention to detail and situational awareness

Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation

Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions

Experience with fiber optic, gas, water, or electrical utilities

Certifications in utility locating or HDD support (e.g., NULCA, state/local certification)

Basic understanding of GIS, GPS, or other surveying systems

OSHA 10 or 30 certification

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs

Frequent walking, kneeling, and bending

Ability to work near heavy machinery and active construction sites

Outdoor construction and utility job sites

Exposure to noise, dust, traffic, and equipment operation

Travel between job sites may be required
