Overview
AcreLabs is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented PCR Microbiology Analyst to join our dynamic laboratory team. The ideal candidate will bring a strong foundation in molecular biology techniques, microbiological analysis, and laboratory safety protocols. In this role, you will help keep cannabis products safe for patients and consumers by performing precise, PCR-based pathogen assays in compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 and applicable state regulations. Working on the bioMérieux GENE-UP PRO platform and the Bio-Rad CFX C1000 thermocycler, the successful applicant will demonstrate expertise in sample enrichment, DNA extraction, and real-time PCR analysis, ensuring accurate and reliable results that protect public health and support our clients.
Responsibilities
- Perform molecular biology assays, including real-time/quantitative PCR (qPCR), to detect Shiga-toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), Salmonella, and Aspergillus in cannabis flower, concentrates, and infused products.
- Enrich, prepare, and incubate samples using selective media (including in-house preparation of Aspergillus Enrichment Broth), maintaining strict aseptic technique throughout.
- Perform DNA extraction using GENE-UP lysis and digest workflows, and set up and run PCR on the Bio-Rad CFX C1000 using bioMérieux GENE-UP PRO kits.
- Prepare and run quality-control samples, including prep blanks, matrix blanks, and kit positive/negative controls, with every batch to ensure valid and reproducible results.
- Interpret quantification-cycle (Cq) and amplification-curve data across multiple detection channels to issue accurate positive, negative, and inhibition calls, and troubleshoot inhibited or invalid runs.
- Maintain strict adherence to laboratory safety protocols, and controlled Standard Operating Procedures during all procedures, including proper handling and disposal of biohazardous materials.
- Operate a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), such as QBench, to record data, track samples and chain of custody, document deviations, and generate reports.
- Maintain instrumentation, including thermocyclers, incubators, centrifuges, and biological safety cabinets, through routine cleaning, calibration, and troubleshooting to ensure optimal performance.
- Collaborate with analysts and laboratory leadership across sites to uphold quality, turnaround time, and consistent results.
Desired Experience
- Proven laboratory experience in microbiology or molecular biology is required; cannabis, food-safety, clinical, or environmental testing backgrounds are all welcome.
- Demonstrated expertise in DNA extraction and real-time (quantitative) PCR, including interpretation of Cq and amplification-curve data across multiple fluorophore channels.
- Working knowledge of aseptic technique, BSL-2 laboratory safety practices, and microbial enrichment methods.
- Familiarity with the bioMérieux GENE-UP / Invisible Sentinel platform and the Bio-Rad CFX C1000 thermocycler is highly desirable.
- Experience with a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) such as QBench for data and sample management is a plus.
- Understanding of quality standards such as ISO/IEC 17025 and applicable state regulatory compliance supports high-quality, defensible results.
- Knowledge of viability PCR for distinguishing live from dead cells is a plus.
- Strong organizational skills, meticulous documentation habits, and the discipline to follow written procedures exactly.
Join our team as a PCR Microbiology Analyst to help ensure the safety and quality of cannabis products while advancing rigorous, science-driven testing in a fast-paced laboratory environment!
