Based in Oak Ridge, TN, we specialize in providing testing services for indoor air quality, water systems, and healthcare environments. Our work integrates analytical culture techniques, microscopy, and molecular methods to generate clear, actionable data delivered through reporting.
As an AIHA accredited laboratory, our procedures are performed within a quality system aligned with ISO/IEC 17025 and industry best practices.
Position Overview
This full-time, in-person position is responsible for performing bacterial and fungal microbiology sample analysis and workflows. This role requires consistency in technique and the ability to execute standardized protocols within a structured laboratory environment. A Technician II is expected to follow approved procedures, maintain accurate records, demonstrate consistent technique, and works under the guidance of the Lab Manager and Technical Director.
Responsibilities
The Microbiology Laboratory Technician II will perform assigned culture-based microbiology workflows under the direction of the Lab Manager and Technical Director. Responsibilities include:
- Prepare, process, incubate, and document microbiology samples according to approved SOPs and controlled laboratory procedures.
- Perform routine culture-based workflows for:
- Legionella potable and non-potable water samples.
- USP <797> environmental monitoring and personnel for competency samples, including contact plates, paddles, viable air samples, gloved fingertip tests, and media fill units.
- Viable bacterial and fungal samples from swabs, water, plates, and bulk materials.
- Perform routine microbiology techniques including plating, streaking, subculturing, colony observation, wet mounts, and microscopy as assigned.
- Assist with preliminary organism characterization and genus/species identification using approved culture, microscopy, and DNA Sequencing methods.
- Accurately record incubation start and end dates, incubation temperatures, colony counts, observations, and other required data at the time the work is performed.
- Enter sample results and support data into laboratory worksheets, logs, and/or LIMS according to established procedures.
- Maintain proper sample tracking, labeling, traceability, and chain-of-custody throughout sample processing.
- Operate and perform routine cleaning or maintenance of culture-related equipment, including incubators, biosafety cabinets, microscopes, autoclaves, refrigerators, freezers, and related laboratory materials.
- Maintain required QC logs, equipment logs, media/reagent records, and traceability documentation.
- Follow laboratory safety procedures, aseptic technique, contamination-control practices, and quality-system requirements.
- Review assigned SOPs and controlled documents and provide practical feedback when workflow issues or procedural inconsistencies are identified.
- Communicate workflow delays, sample issues, contamination concerns, equipment problems, and nonconforming conditions to the Lab Manager or Technical Director.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Biology, or related field
- Two years of laboratory experience (USP<797> experience preferred)
Compensation and Benefits
- $21.00 – $23.00 per hour
