OVERVIEW:
Merrick & Company is looking for a mid-level Process Engineer to join our team in Oak Ridge, TN. We’re seeking candidates who are passionate about nuclear design, enjoy working on a multidisciplinary team, and appreciate the Knoxville, TN area.
In this role, you will primarily focus on innovative nuclear and energy projects. Successful candidates will collaborate with a diverse team of engineers and designers to deliver high-quality design and engineering solutions.
In-office/WFH hybrid schedules are offered.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Evaluate and solve complex problems with guidance from more senior staff.

Work with other disciplines to improve accuracy of the deliverables, to meet schedule, and budget commitments.

Prepares process design deliverables including:
- Process Flow Diagrams
- Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams
- Equipment sizing calculations
- Process line sizing calculations

Pressure relief device sizing calculations
- Mass & energy balances / process simulations
-
Equipment and Instrument datasheets
-
Piping/equipment specifications
-
Work in a multi-disciplined design team environment.

Interpret customer requirements or code/standard requirements to establish design criteria.

Meet with clients to develop relationships.

Prepare proposal estimates for design work.

Provide in depth and comprehensive technical peer reviews on design documents, relative to experience level, in a timely manner.
- Effectively delivers status updates to lead engineers and demonstrates efficient task progress.

Reviews design drawings and documents for specification and scope compliance in a timely manner.
- Technical work/documents are relatively error free and demonstrates self-checking of work before submitting documents for peer review.

Able to lead project tasks or small projects (depending on experience level) and be involved in client meetings pertaining to task/project.

Expected to represent the Process group for internal and external clients.
- Coordinates design inputs and design activities and efforts of other engineering disciplines.

Directs preparation of process design deliverables to more junior engineers.

Capable of standing in for Process lead in project meetings.

Ability to act as sole Process lead on small scale projects.

Able to perform many process tasks autonomously (e.g. calculations, report writing, options study).

Assistance available from more senior engineers on complex assignments and decision making.

Reviews and checks the work of other process engineers to determine accuracy and completeness.

PE Stamp design documents on projects (if candidate has PE license).
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from A.B.E.T accredited program required.

3+ years of related engineering experience required.
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) License preferred. Interest in obtaining a P.E. License when minimum qualification years of experience is reached is expected.

Exhibits generally sound technical knowledge to produce design deliverables with some guidance from senior engineers.

Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts (e.g. logarithms, differential equations, integrations, etc.) to solving design problems and analysis test data.

Ability to respond to common inquiries or requests from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.

Ability to develop presentations that effectively convey information to audience.

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts/inputs, and draw valid technical conclusions.

Working knowledge of industry codes and standards.

Exercises initiative, judgment and knowledge as required in areas of responsibility.

Listens well and follows instructions without repeated reminder of instructions or expectations. And provides clear instructions to others when delegating work.

An understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities, including demonstrating professional communications with coworkers and customers/clients.

Provide mentorship to junior engineers.

Display ability to review technical design documents/packages and be able to identify issues/pitfalls, even if solution is not identifiable.

Experience using ChemCad/Aspen/HYSYS (or similar) process simulator and AFT Fathom, AFT Arrow (or similar) for hydraulic pipe flow modeling preferred.

Travel to client sites, as needed.
