Job Summary
The Powder Coater prepares and coats manufactured metal components to required color, coverage, thickness, and finish specifications. This position reads prints and related production documents, inspects parts before coating, operates and monitors powder-coating equipment and ovens, and maintains a safe, clean, and productive work area with limited supervision.
Responsibilities
- Maintain a steady flow of work while meeting quality and production requirements.
- Visually inspect parts entering the coating system to verify that surfaces are properly prepared before application.
- Read prints, schematics, and production documents to confirm the required color, coating application, and finish specifications.
- Apply powder coating consistently to achieve the required mil thickness across products of varying sizes and configurations.
- Monitor the bake oven whenever it is in operation and identify conditions that could affect cure or finish quality.
- Clean, inspect, and maintain spray guns, powder-coating equipment, and related tools; perform minor repairs when appropriate.
- Inspect completed work for coverage, appearance, thickness, and other quality requirements, and correct defects when needed.
- Keep the work area clean, organized, and free of avoidable safety hazards.
- Wear required personal protective equipment and follow company safety rules, OSHA requirements, and established best practices.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Minimum Qualifications
- At least two years of powder-coating experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Working knowledge of standard powder-coating concepts, equipment, practices, and procedures.
- Ability to read and accurately interpret blueprints, schematics, prints, and basic production specifications.
- Basic math skills and strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work with limited supervision and maintain consistent quality and productivity.
- High school diploma or GED.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience applying powder coating to fabricated metal products with varying shapes and surface areas.
- Experience measuring and maintaining specified coating thicknesses.
- Experience maintaining spray guns, powder-delivery equipment, and industrial bake ovens.
- Industrial wet-painting experience.
Physical and Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment that is not climate controlled and may require overtime.
- Ability to regularly stand, walk, reach, balance, bend, twist, stoop, crouch, crawl, kneel, and climb as required by the work.
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds; heavier lifts may require assistance or lifting equipment.
- Ability to work around powder, paint fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and moderate to high noise levels while using required controls and PPE.
- Vision sufficient for close and distance work, color identification, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
