Position Summary
Great Lakes Dryhootch, a peer support organization serving veterans and civilians throughout Milwaukee County, is hiring for a Peer Support Specialist position to provide recovery-oriented support in community-based settings.
This role is based at 1030 E Brady Street, but services are delivered where participants live and spend time in the community. Reliable transportation is required.
Veteran status is not required to apply.
Peer Support Specialists use their lived experience with mental health, PTSD, substance use, and/or co-occurring disorders to support individuals in their recovery journey. This role focuses on building trust, promoting hope, and empowering individuals to achieve personal recovery goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-on-one peer support services in community settings (homes, community spaces, and other locations)
- Use lived experience to build rapport, engagement, and trust with participants
- Support individuals in developing recovery goals and action plans
- Assist participants in navigating mental health, substance use, and social service systems
- Promote coping skills, crisis prevention, and community stability
- Encourage self-advocacy, independence, and personal empowerment
- Maintain accurate documentation in electronic health records (EHR)
- Collaborate with providers, supports, and community partners (with consent)
- Participate in team meetings, supervision, and required trainings
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or HSED required
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a human services or related field preferred
- Completion of State of Wisconsin Peer Specialist training may be required
- Current Certified Peer Specialist certification may be required
- Lived experience with mental health, PTSD, substance use, or co-occurring recovery
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and manage a community-based caseload
- Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and insurance preferred
- Ability to pass required background checks (BHD and agency requirements)

Pay: $20.00 - $35.00 per hour
