The Steel Shop Helper assists with the daily operations of the steel fabrication shop by preparing materials, operating hand and power tools, maintaining a clean and safe work environment, and supporting fabricators and welders. The ideal candidate has experience using common shop tools, grinders, and measuring equipment and is committed to working safely in a fast-paced environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with the fabrication, assembly, and preparation of steel products.
- Safely operate hand tools and power tools, including angle grinders, drills, saws, and other shop equipment.
- Grind, deburr, and clean steel materials and finished products.
- Measure, mark, and prepare materials according to specifications.
- Load, unload, and move steel materials using proper lifting techniques and equipment.
- Support welders and fabricators with material handling and setup.
- Keep the shop clean, organized, and free of safety hazards.
- Inspect tools and equipment before use and report any maintenance needs.
- Follow all company safety policies, OSHA guidelines, and use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Perform other shop duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous experience in a steel fabrication, manufacturing, or construction environment is preferred.
- Working knowledge of hand tools, power tools, and angle grinders.
- Ability to read a tape measure accurately.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Dependable, punctual, and safety-conscious.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work on your feet for extended periods.
- Comfortable working in a manufacturing/shop environment with exposure to noise, dust, and varying temperatures. Should be able to sustain hot weather.
- Ability to wear required PPE, including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and steel-toe boots.
Preferred Skills
- Experience using grinders, chop saws, drills, and other fabrication tools.
- Familiarity with metal fabrication and steel preparation.
- Forklift or overhead crane experience is a plus (training or certification may be required).
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
