Train Young Actors. Teach the Craft.
At Acting Out, we believe young performers deserve the same thoughtful, disciplined acting training as adults—delivered in a way that's engaging, age-appropriate, and genuinely fun.
For more than 25 years, we've built our reputation by developing skilled young actors through rigorous training in acting and musical theatre. Our classes challenge students to think, imagine, listen, connect, and tell truthful stories. We don't simply prepare students for performances—we help them become actors.
We're looking for an exceptional educator who shares that philosophy and is excited to inspire the next generation of performers.
While this position begins as a part-time teaching role, our goal is to find someone who wants to grow with Acting Out. As our organization continues to expand, we anticipate opportunities for the right person to develop into a full-time educator and studio leader, combining exceptional teaching with administrative leadership and helping shape the future of our programs.
Yes, our students build confidence—but confidence is the result of mastering a craft.
From their very first class, students learn to listen, pursue objectives, create believable characters, tell compelling stories, connect truthfully with scene partners, and perform with authenticity. Whether they're five or eighteen, they're learning the fundamentals of great acting.
We're looking for an educator who believes the same thing.
About Acting Out
Acting Out is a family-owned performing arts studio with locations in Westfield and Metuchen, New Jersey. Since opening our doors over 25 years ago, we've earned a reputation for providing some of the most respected actor training for young performers in the region.
Our students have gone on to perform in professional theatre, regional productions, national tours, film and television, and highly competitive college theatre programs. More importantly, they've developed the confidence, discipline, creativity, and communication skills that come from authentic theatre training.
We are not a dance studio adding acting classes to its schedule. Acting is what we do. It is the foundation of everything we teach.
The Position
We're seeking an enthusiastic, knowledgeable educator to teach acting and/or musical theatre classes for students ages 5–18. Classes are divided by age and experience level and meet weekday afternoons and evenings, generally between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM.
Our teachers have the opportunity to make a lasting impact by helping students grow into skilled performers and confident communicators.
Responsibilities
- Teach weekly acting and/or musical theatre classes.
- Create engaging lesson plans that challenge students while keeping learning enjoyable.
- Teach acting through scene work, improvisation, objectives, character development, movement, storytelling, vocal performance, and ensemble work.
- Help students develop discipline, focus, imagination, and truthful performance skills.
- Prepare students for showcases and performances throughout the year.
- Foster a classroom culture that balances high expectations with encouragement and support.
- Collaborate with fellow educators to continually strengthen our programs.
The Ideal Candidate
You might be a great fit if you...
- Have training or professional experience in acting, musical theatre, theatre education, directing, or a related field.
- Believe acting is a craft that can and should be taught from an early age.
- Enjoy working with children and teens and know how to inspire them while maintaining high expectations.
- Can lead a classroom with confidence, warmth, creativity, and professionalism.
- Are dependable, organized, and communicate effectively with parents, students, and colleagues.
- Can reliably commute to our Westfield and/or Metuchen studio locations.
- Are available weekday afternoons and evenings (generally 4:00–7:00 PM).
Teaching experience is preferred, but we also welcome experienced performers, directors, and theatre artists who are passionate about sharing their knowledge with the next generation.
Why Teach at Acting Out?
- Join a studio with a 25-year reputation for excellence in actor training.
- Teach students who genuinely want to learn and improve.
- Work alongside educators who care deeply about the craft.
- Have the freedom to teach—not simply supervise rehearsals.
- Opportunities for additional teaching, camps, directing, private coaching, and special events.
- Competitive hourly pay based on experience.
Growth Opportunities
We're not simply looking to fill a few teaching hours—we're looking to invest in exceptional people.
As Acting Out continues to grow, we are committed to promoting from within whenever possible. Educators who demonstrate outstanding teaching ability, professionalism, leadership, and a commitment to our philosophy may have opportunities to expand their role through:
- Additional weekly teaching hours
- Summer camps and workshops
- Private coaching
- Directing productions and showcases
- Curriculum development
- Leadership and mentoring opportunities
For the right individual, there is also the potential to grow into a full-time salaried position that combines teaching with studio leadership and administrative responsibilities. This role would involve helping shape the day-to-day operations of the studio, supporting students and families, collaborating on programming, and playing a key role in the continued growth of Acting Out.
If you're looking not just for a part-time teaching position, but for the opportunity to build a long-term career in theatre education and studio leadership, we'd love to meet you.
