ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for an experienced and driven Estimator to take ownership of the estimating function at our growing excavation and construction company. You will be responsible for developing accurate, competitive, and strategically priced estimates across a diverse pipeline of sitework and excavation projects. You will work directly with ownership and project management, and will play a key role in shaping how we price, win, and execute work as we continue to grow.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Own the full estimating process from initial review through final bid submission on excavation, sitework, grading, utilities, and related scopes of work.
Perform detailed quantity take-offs from civil, structural, and site drawings to develop precise material, equipment, and labor requirements.
Build and maintain a consistent, organized estimating system that supports efficient turnaround on bids of all sizes.
Develop competitive pricing strategies by analyzing project scope, site conditions, market rates, and subcontractor/vendor pricing.
Collaborate closely with project managers and field leadership to ensure estimates reflect real-world site conditions and execution requirements.
Review contract documents, scopes of work, and bid packages to identify risks, exclusions, and opportunities before submission.
Track estimate-to-actual performance on completed projects to continuously improve pricing accuracy and methodology.
Mentor and support junior estimating staff as the department grows.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
5+ years of estimating experience in excavation, sitework, grading, underground utilities, or heavy civil construction — this is a hard requirement.
Demonstrated ability to independently lead bids from start to finish with minimal oversight.
Strong command of quantity take-off methods and unit cost estimating for earthwork, trucking, drainage, and site improvements.
Deep understanding of construction contracts, subcontract scopes, and the ability to identify gaps or risk in bid documents.
Experience reading and interpreting civil drawings, grading plans, utility plans, and geotechnical reports.
Strong communicator who can present and defend numbers to management, clients, and project teams with confidence.
Highly organized, process-oriented, and able to manage multiple bids simultaneously without losing accuracy.
Familiarity with the New York/New Jersey construction market, union labor rates, and local subcontractor landscape is a strong advantage.
WHY JOIN US
True ownership of the estimating function of the company.
A strong and growing pipeline of excavation and development projects across the region.
A team that values field knowledge, accuracy, and getting the job done right the first time.
Competitive compensation with real upside as the company grows.
