What You'll Do:
The Public Health Laboratory is seeking a Laboratory Scientist 3 in the Quality Assurance and Compliance section to coordinate daily operations, perform root cause investigations, review maintenance records, and update standard operating procedures. Duties include:

Investigate nonconforming events in the laboratory to ensure a high level of accuracy and reliability of laboratory results.

Solve problems and resolve issues interfering with testing by interpreting test results and conducting quality audits of laboratory operations.

Work independently to solve problems and resolve issues interfering with testing.

Provide customer service to internal and external partners.

Improve laboratory quality assurance efforts including conducting internal audits, tracking deviations, and implementing corrective actions.

Use laboratory data and findings to produce technical and scientific reports and papers.

Facilitate collaboration and coordination between state agencies and other Public Health Preparedness stakeholders.

Assist Microbiology Supervisor in the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and testing methodologies.
Unusual Working Conditions: Selected candidates must be vaccinated for Hepatitis-B and will be exposed to biofluids and tissue, sharps, caustic or toxic chemicals, and/or explosives; may work varying hours and must be able to provide own transportation.
VACCINATED: Proof of Hepatitis-B vaccination due before first day of work (do NOT provide, until directed to do so).
NOT VACCINATED: Qualified candidates NOT yet fully vaccinated for Hepatitis-B must be able & willing to receive the vaccination. We can provide it at no cost (post-hire) and temporarily limit your work duties to prevent exposure.
Normal working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. This is an hourly position, with a pay range of 32 on the OCSEA Pay Range Schedule.

Qualifications
Positions in Department of Health must meet 1 of 6 options:
(1) Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology; and 24 mos. pertinent laboratory experience or training in the specialty or subspecialty in which the individual will be assigned.
(2) Medical Technician (MT) certification.
(3) Master's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology; and 12 mos. pertinent laboratory experience or training in the specialty or subspecialty in which the individual will be assigned or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification.
(4) Education &/or training equivalent to 60 semester hours, or equivalent, that included 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; and 30 mos. pertinent laboratory experience commensurate with job duties to be performed as outlined per approved position description on file.
(5) Education &/or training equivalent to 60 semester hours, or equivalent, that included 24 semester hours of science that included 6 semester hours of chemistry; and 6 semester hours of biology; and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; and 30 mos. documented laboratory exp. in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
(6) 12 mos. exp. as a Laboratory Scientist 2 (83292) in a clinical laboratory.
Applications of those who meet the minimum qualifications will be further evaluated against the following criteria:
Undergraduate or advanced degree in a biological, chemical, natural or physical science
Experience with application of microbiology and molecular assay workflow best practices
Experience in microbiological and molecular procedures
Experience with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations and compliance
Experience documenting quality control and/or quality assurance measures
Experience with Non-conforming Events, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), or Corrective and Preventative Actions (CAPA)
Experience training others
Experience writing technical laboratory procedures
Experience in chemical inventory control of reagents and supplies
Experience communicating with public health professionals
Experience in Laboratory and/or Facility Safety

Unless required by legislation, the selected candidate will begin at Pay Grade 32, Step 1 of the union (OCSEA) Pay Range Schedule ($31.47 per hour), with an opportunity for pay increase after six months ($32.84 per hour) of satisfactory performance and then a yearly raise thereafter.
