Afterschool Counselor
Position Type: Part-Time
Salary Range: $16.94 - $17.25
Days & Hours: Monday – Friday 2:00pm – 6:00pm, with additional hours as needed for early release days, staff meetings, training, special events, or program activities
Position Summary
The Afterschool Counselor is responsible for providing a safe, positive, and engaging environment for children participating in the afterschool program. The counselor will supervise students, lead activities, assist with homework, encourage positive behavior, and help create a welcoming and inclusive program where every child feels supported.
Essential Responsibilities
- Supervise and ensure the safety and well-being of all students throughout the program.
- Build positive and respectful relationships with children, families, and fellow staff members.
- Lead and participate in age-appropriate recreational, educational, arts and crafts, sports, and enrichment activities.
- Assist students with homework, reading, and other academic activities as needed.
- Follow daily schedules, program procedures, and safety guidelines.
- Maintain an organized, clean, and welcoming program space.
- Encourage teamwork, cooperation, respect, and positive social interactions among students.
- Monitor student behavior and use positive guidance and age-appropriate behavior-management techniques.
- Assist with snack time, transitions, dismissal, and other daily program routines.
- Communicate any safety, behavioral, or student concerns to the Afterschool Supervisor.
- Maintain accurate attendance and ensure students are released only to authorized individuals.
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities.
- Assist with special events, theme days, field trips, and other program activities.
- Serve as a positive role model for students at all times.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Afterschool Supervisor or Program Director.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Must have previous experience working with children in a school, camp, childcare, recreation, or youth-program setting.
- Ability to communicate effectively and work well as part of a team.
- Responsible, dependable, patient, and energetic.
- Ability to engage children in fun, age-appropriate activities.
- Strong supervision and organizational skills.
- Must be able to maintain a safe and positive environment for children.
- Must successfully complete all required background checks and program requirements.
*This position requires the ability to actively supervise and participate in activities with children. Employees may be required to stand, walk, bend, lift, carry supplies, and participate in indoor and outdoor recreational activities.
Pay: $16.94 - $17.25 per hour
