Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and energetic PRN (as-needed) Preoperative and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) Nurse to join our dynamic healthcare team. In this vital role, you will provide exceptional nursing care to patients before and after surgical procedures, ensuring their safety, comfort, and smooth recovery. This position offers flexibility for experienced nurses who thrive in fast-paced environments and are passionate about delivering high-quality patient care. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, utilize advanced EMR (Electronic Medical Record) systems, and apply your extensive clinical skills to support patient outcomes during critical perioperative phases. Our surgical specialties are Oculoplastic, Facial plastic and Pain injections.
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including vital signs, physical examinations, and medical history reviews prior to surgery or procedures.
- Administer medications, including IV infusions and injections, following strict aseptic techniques and hospital protocols.
- Monitor patients closely in the preoperative and PACU settings, managing airway management, ventilator support, and acute pain control as needed.
- Assist with complex procedures such as suturing, catheterization (including urinary and vascular), and specimen collection/processing.
- Document all patient interactions accurately within EMR/EHR systems like Epic or Cerner, ensuring compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Collaborate with surgical teams, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care plans and discharge instructions.
- Provide education on postoperative care, including wound care, medication administration, nutrition, and activity restrictions for patients and their families.
Qualifications
- Valid RN license with current state registration and compliance with licensure requirements
- Proven experience in perioperative settings such as OR, PACU, ICU, or emergency medicine with a focus on acute pain management and critical care experience
- Familiarity with EMR/EHR systems including Epic, Cerner, Athenahealth or eClinicalWorks for accurate medical documentation
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, ICD coding (ICD-9/10), CPT coding, and infection control protocols
- Skilled in IV insertion, venipuncture, catheter care—including Foley catheters—and sterile processing techniques
- Experience working with diverse patient populations including pediatrics, geriatrics, individuals with disabilities or developmental disabilities, memory care patients or those requiring hospice & palliative medicine services
- Ability to perform physical examinations and diagnostic evaluations while demonstrating excellent patient assessment skills
- Strong understanding of OSHA standards related to aseptic technique and infection prevention in hospital or outpatient settings
