Position Overview
The Legal Bookkeeper is responsible for providing accurate, timely bookkeeping and financial support to a portfolio of law firm clients. This client-facing role manages day-to-day accounting functions, including trust accounting, reconciliations, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and monthly financial reporting while delivering exceptional client service.
This role is ideal for a detail- and solutions-oriented bookkeeper who is interested in growing their career and taking on increasing responsibilities over time. As proficiency is demonstrated, additional responsibilities in coaching, workflow management, process improvement, and operational leadership may be assigned.
Primary Responsibilities
General Accounting & Bookkeeping
- Manage the day-to-day bookkeeping for assigned law firm clients.
- Record, reconcile, and maintain accurate financial transactions, including bank accounts, credit cards, loans, and other balance sheet accounts.
- Prepare monthly financial statements and complete month-end close activities.
- Support year-end accounting activities and CPA requests.
Trust Accounting
- Maintain attorney trust accounts in accordance with applicable state bar requirements and firm procedures.
- Perform monthly three-way trust reconciliations, investigate discrepancies, monitor trust balances, and coordinate trust replenishments.
Accounts Payable & Receivable
- Process vendor invoices and schedule payments according to client approval procedures.
- Record client payments, maintain accurate accounts receivable records, and investigate discrepancies as needed.
- Monitor outstanding balances and assist with collection follow-up.
Client Service
- Build and maintain strong relationships with assigned clients.
- Respond to client questions professionally and promptly while providing clear accounting guidance.
- Communicate recommendations, project updates, and potential concerns proactively.
- Escalate complex or high-risk issues when appropriate.
Leadership & Professional Growth
- Demonstrate sound judgment, accountability, and ownership in resolving client issues.
- Demonstrate initiative by identifying opportunities to improve client service, team effectiveness, and internal processes.
- Support the Accounting Manager with workflow coordination, onboarding, and special projects as assigned.
- Serve as a trusted resource for peers by sharing knowledge and best practices.
- Demonstrate the initiative and capability to assume expanded responsibilities, including mentoring team members and supporting financial operations as the company grows.
Performance Expectations
- Meet all assigned client deadlines while maintaining accuracy and quality.
- Prioritize work based on monthly accounting cycles and established deadlines.
- Maintain accurate task tracking through project management software.
- Communicate proactively when workload, client concerns, or potential deadline risks arise.
- Exercise independent judgment by identifying potential issues, researching solutions, and presenting recommendations rather than simply escalating problems.
- Adapt to changing priorities while maintaining exceptional client service.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that improve efficiency, consistency, and the client experience.
Key Qualifications
Experience
- 3+ years of bookkeeping or general ledger accounting experience.
- Experience managing multiple clients simultaneously preferred.
- Law firm accounting or professional services experience preferred.
- Trust accounting experience strongly preferred.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency with QuickBooks Online required.
- Experience with law firm software such as Clio, Centerbase, Tabs, RocketMatter, or Smokeball is a plus.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills.

Reporting Structure
- Reports directly to the Accounting Manager.
- Works collaboratively with the Legal Accounting Team Lead, Senior Legal Accounting Specialists, Accounting Specialists, and other team members.
Pay: $45,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year
