Full Job Description

Position Summary

The City of West St Paul is now hiring a Recreation Facilities Maintenance Technician!

This position will assist in planning and implementing programs for the city’s recreational facilities, including the pool, ice arena, sports dome, athletic fields, courts, park buildings, and performs administrative work associated with the same.
Perform routine to skilled mechanical and maintenance duties for the recreational facilities. Assists in the supervision of facilities seasonal staff involved in maintenance and customer service activities.

Primary Duties

Provides work direction, makes assignments, and evaluates the work of personnel in the absence of the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor to assure safe and clean facilities.
Staff facility front desk, greets visitors, and resolves problems in a tactful and professional manner; sells and books facility time.
Assists with the training of part-time recreational facility employees and/or contractors in operations of equipment, maintenance procedures, etc.
Adheres to policies, practices, and established controls.
Assists in cleaning and maintaining recreational facilities and equipment.
Operates heavy maintenance equipment (ex. Zamboni, lifts, UTV’s, etc.) and works with pool chemicals.
Enforces established rules to always ensure safe use of the facilities.
Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as are apparent or assigned.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

Minimum Requirement

Possess a valid driver’s license.
1 year of experience in recreational operations and cleaning, ideally at an ice arena, pool, and/or sports dome, and maintaining large heavily used facilities.
Ability to work weekdays, weeknights, weekends, holidays, and on call as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with ice making machinery, ice resurfacing equipment, and refrigeration equipment.
Experience in artificial turf sanitization, heat fusing, and other major dome repair techniques.
Certified Pool & Spa Operators (CPO) certification.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of facility scheduling and programming
Knowledge of ice arena, sports dome, and pool maintenance and repair.
Communication skills: listening, asking questions, determining possible problems/solutions and explaining technical issues in a clear and understandable manner to non-technical employees and users.
Customer service skills.
Follow both verbal and written direction and apply specific rules to situations.
Work independently and make good decisions based on established guidelines and procedures.
Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with city staff to maintain effective working relationships with others.
Provide staff work direction to ensure they are productive, provide excellent customer service, and maintain clean facilities.
Ability to frequently sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands/arms and less often but regularly, stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
