What to Expect
Tesla is seeking an innovative Mechanical Design Engineer, Process to join our Mechanical Design Engineering team in Fremont, CA. Our team is responsible for creating the factory of the future by transforming conceptual ideas into fully integrated, cutting-edge mechanical designs for process and utility systems. This position is a full-time, on-site role in Fremont. As a member of the Mechanical Design Engineering team, you will apply strong process and chemical engineering principles to the mechanical design of industrial systems, ensuring they are safe, reliable, code-compliant, and seamlessly integrated with Tesla’s advanced manufacturing processes.
What You'll Do-
Support the ultimate system owner for a wide range of process and utility systems, including electrolyte handling, high-purity water, pump and compressor systems, reverse osmosis, distillation, and heat transfer fluid systems

Produce mechanical design engineering deliverables, including: Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), 3D piping design and Piping ISO drawings, Pressure drop and hydraulic analysis, Equipment, piping, and valve selection and sizing, Material compatibility assessments, Relief valve selection, calculations, and documentation, Sequence of operations and control philosophy

Interface with equipment suppliers from concept through detailed design, procurement, installation, and acceptance testing

Develop operating procedures, safety protocols, and maintenance plans for large-scale process equipment

Review and ensure all mechanical designs meet applicable codes, standards, and the highest quality requirements

Support field construction and commissioning activities, serving as the technical point of contact for real-time issue resolution

Collaborate with external EPC firms during bidding and project execution to ensure designs align with Tesla’s engineering standards
What You'll Bring-
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or equivalent experience, with a strong foundation in engineering fundamentals and the ability to solve complex technical problems

5+ years of experience in mechanical or process system design for industrial facilities, with experience in high-tech industries such as semiconductor, specialty chemical, solar, battery, or similar environments. A combination of owner-operator and EPC experience is highly desired

Proven experience developing PFDs, P&IDs, and working knowledge of process simulation software (a plus)

Experience creating process control narratives and Sequence of Operations, and collaborating with controls engineers on the implementation of control systems

Strong proficiency in utility systems, chemical bulk storage, and distribution system design

In-depth knowledge of OSHA, ASME, and applicable building codes

Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Revit MEP, Navisworks, Bluebeam, Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, and Pipe-Flo

Excellent communication skills with the ability to interface effectively at all levels

US-based Professional Engineer (PE) license required, with willingness to obtain a California PE license

Expected Compensation
$109,600 - $195,600/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
