Job Summary: An Optometric Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting optometrists and ensuring smooth day-to-day operations within an optometry practice. They assist with patient care, perform administrative tasks, and help maintain a positive and efficient patient experience.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Patient Reception and Appointment Scheduling:
- Greet patients, answer phone calls, and assist in scheduling appointments.
- Verify patient information and update records accurately.
2. Pre-Exam Procedures:
- Prepare patients for exams by conducting preliminary tests, including measuring visual acuity, color vision, depth perception, and tonometry.
- Record patient medical history and relevant information for the optometrist's review.
3. Assist with Eye Examinations:
- Assist the optometrist during eye examinations by managing equipment, and performing specific tests as instructed.
4. Contact Lens Fitting and Training:
- Assist with contact lens fittings, including providing instructions on lens insertion, removal, cleaning, and care.
- Educate patients on proper contact lens usage and hygiene.
5. Administrative Duties:
- Handle administrative tasks such as filing patient records, billing, and insurance claims.
- Manage patient recalls and follow-up appointments.
6. Maintain Clean and Organized Workspace:
- Ensure all areas within the practice are clean, organized, and presentable to create a positive patient experience.
- Sterilize and maintain equipment and instruments.
7. Patient Education:
- Educate patients on eye health, proper eye care, and any prescribed treatments or recommendations from the optometrist.
8. Customer Service and Communication:
- Provide exceptional customer service, addressing patient inquiries, concerns, and requests in a courteous and professional manner.
- Communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and external stakeholders.
Schedule:
- Monday through Friday
- Rotating Saturdays
Pay Frequency:
- Biweekly
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Able to alternate between sitting, walking, stooping, and standing for long periods of time up to 8 hours a day.
- Able to use technology including Apple and PC computers.
- Able to communicate with patients in person or over the phone.
- Able to integrate information for decision making.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; relevant certifications or training in optometry is a plus.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities.
- Proficiency in using office software and other relevant tools.
- Basic understanding of optometric procedures and equipment.
- Previous experience in a medical or optometry setting is advantageous.
- Have current CPO/CPOA certification or be willing to become certified.
Salary Range:
- $22.00 - $26.00 per hour.
