JOB SUMMARY
Project Application Engineer will support the various engineering and technical projects as well as selling objectives of Wyoming Machinery Company Energy Solutions (Energy Solutions) through direction and coordination by the Energy Solutions Engineering Manager. To include local project engineering and management, as well as application engineering. This could include design, technical support, project controls, project management, construction support, power system pricing and ordering, coordinating and selling. In general, to manage/engineer projects of limited exposure to the company using the appropriate resources as provided by Energy Solutions, Caterpillar, and other vendor affiliates. Various levels of knowledge and abilities listed below are required and will determine job placement.
Job placement will be based on knowledge, skills, and abilities in accordance with the following guidelines, including prior experience:
- Project Application Engineer I: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or related Engineering Discipline, from an accredited 4-year college or university. Basic understanding of how engines, generators, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and PV Solar are used in Power Systems applications.
- Project Application Engineer II: In addition to the above role and responsibilities, minimum 3 years of experience in power systems design, management or sales. Additional certificates or endorsements from applicable training related to project management, application engineering, and power generation are preferred. Extensive technical knowledge of power systems (engine, generator and electrical systems), preferably Caterpillar, technical design and process management are required. Serve as the primary Project Manager / Engineer for projects in which Energy Solutions functions as the General Contractor or EPC (Engineering Procurement Construction) Contractor. This will include setup, host, and leading regular meetings with all concerned parties involved in projects and will be measured by successful completion managing and executing these large scale and complex power systems projects.
- Project Application Engineer III: In addition to the above roles and responsibilities, Project Application Engineer III must have a demonstrated history of leadership progression and professional responsibilities as it relates to project oversight, and will be responsible for leading multidisciplinary project teams. Minimum 6 years of experience in power systems design, project management, or sales. Advanced understanding of the use of computer software programs, such as, Microsoft, AutoDesk, SKM, PSCAD, CADWorx, or other drafting and design products in a professional setting. Additionally, specific experience creating and managing projects, including schedules, budgets, submittals, etc. using project management software such as Procore, along with programs like Microsoft Project or Primavera P6, are expected. An understanding of relevant Power
Generation EPC Project Codes, Standards, and Processes is also an expectation for a Level III candidate.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Project Application Engineer will be required to learn and understand the installation and application of various types of equipment and systems that Energy Solutions provides, installs, and maintains both individually and as part of larger projects:
oIndustrial and Petroleum Engines
oDiesel and Natural Gas Electric Power Generators
oBESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems)
oSolar Power (PV, Inverters, System Controllers, Racking and Tracking Systems, etc.)
oOther Power Systems Equipment, such as Electrical Switchgear, Power Transformers, Emissions Reduction Systems, etc.
oIndustrial Plant Components and Systems, such as Process Piping, Pumps, Compressors, Heat Exchangers, Storage Tanks, Fans, Instrumentation, etc.
Project Engineering/Management:
- Follow the System Engineering Guide for each Project to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
- Communicate effectively with other engineers, internal procurement, construction, and commissioning team members, contractors, customers, end-users, etc.
- Assist and collaborate in the development and management of project schedules in accordance with Energy Solutions’ standards and the customers’ expectations, as it relates to the engineers’ role on a project.
- Perform engineering tasks, as required and assigned, on projects as it relates to background, role, and area of expertise.
- Review of Customer’s specification and allocated requirements by reviewing design drawings, submittals, calculations, component integration and job site details for technical accuracy and completeness.
- For projects requiring WMC – PSD fabrication, assembly and installation services: construct a production work order using WMC Sales WO Status tool and releasing to the appropriate department. The production work order should include all production design requirements (as was sold or specified by the customer), equipment catalog cut- sheets and installation information, drawings, etc.
- Review on-going production progress, on a segment-by-segment basis, for accuracy and quality as per the production work order and customers’ requirements. Upon completion of a segment, ensure that all appropriate signatures and reviews have been performed by production.
- Coordinate meetings internally, as well as with clients and vendors throughout the life of the project:
- Source, purchase, and expedite major components and accessories, within project forecasted budgets.
- Track project costs throughout the life of the project to ensure budgets are met, in coordination with project controls, construction, and procurement team members, and upon completion assist in producing a project cost summary.
Sales Application Support:
- Reviewing the customer’s specifications against the sales quotation to gain a better understanding of the all requirements and commitments, while at the same time, creating a specification review to identify discrepancies, exceptions, clarifications, and/or special notes.
- When required, create submittals for the customer’s approval prior to final order being placed with Caterpillar, or other vendors.
- Generate necessary equipment drawings for submittals and production (as required by the specification requirements) utilizing Energy Solutions resources. This will include general arrangement drawings (GA Drawings), conceptual layouts, structural drawings and equipment footprints, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P & ID), electrical schematics (AC, DC, and Interconnection Diagrams) and instrumentation List.
- Provide sizing calculations for all equipment and their respective component integration, as required by the customer and to ensure each product performed by Energy Solutions maintains the highest
quality, reliability, and most importantly safety levels.
- Build Operation and Maintenance (O & M) Manuals including as built information to be sent to the customer upon project completion utilizing Energy Solutions resources.
Project Reporting:
- Project Application Engineer will keep track of all information regarding projects using the required software. The progress of each project and its current phase will be reported to the Power Systems Engineering Manager. As the project(s) advances through the Process Phases, according to the System Engineering Guide, the Project Application Engineer I will take the information to Power Systems Engineering Manager to review and sign off on each individual phase before the project advances to the next phase. The intent of this reporting is to keep accuracy, efficiency and history of each PSD project for continued future improvement.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
- Will work on other engineering projects throughout WMC as designated by Energy Solutions Engineering Manager.
- Coordinate advertising, promotion and marketing activities with various entities in the Company and with Caterpillar to ensure that a consistent, appropriate message is delivered to the territory.
QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE/SKILL/ABILITY
- Completed B.S. in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or related Engineering Discipline, from an accredited 4yr College or University.
- Successful understanding of how engines, generators, PV and energy storage systems are used.
- This individual must also have an excellent understanding of the use of computer software programs, such as, Microsoft Office, AutoDesk, and other drafting products. (Experience in a professional setting required for II & III.)
- The Project Application Engineer should also possess following skills/knowledge: ability to work effectively with others, both inside and outside the company, ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally, basic public speaking skills, advanced computer skills, able to organize time and priorities, and be Self-motivated.
PREFERRED
- Experience in power systems design, project management or sales are preferred.
- A thorough knowledge of power systems (engine, generator and electrical systems), preferably Caterpillar, technical design and process management is preferred.
- Experience with Procore or other construction and project management software / tools is preferred.
- A Professional Engineering (PE) License is preferred, but not required.
PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Material and equipment directly used: Company forms for quotes, rental contracts, invoicing, expense accounting and the like. The Project Application Engineer will use product literature, reference material, and Company files. The PC, telephone, and other business tools will be used on a daily basis.
- Visits to Company facilities, Energy Solutions Project locations, customer offices and job sites.
- Must be able to work long days
