Job Title: Mechanical Designer
Actalent is adding a Creo Designer resource to our consulting team supporting an important client in the technology space. This person will work hybrid but need to be onsite in the Bay Area, CA or in Oregon, multiple times per month. This is a "power user" type role, needing to be a savvy Creo user with significant demonstratable experience.
Job Description
This role focuses on high-impact mechanical CAD design and drafting using Creo and Windchill to support mechanical and electromechanical product development. The Mechanical Designer / Drafter creates and maintains 3D models, assemblies, detailed drawings, and production documentation, enabling engineers to concentrate on analysis and system-level design. This position emphasizes precise CAD execution, documentation, and configuration control rather than traditional engineering analysis responsibilities.
Responsibilities
-
Create, maintain, and release CAD models and drawings in Creo and manage associated data in Windchill.
-
Build and manage detailed parts and assemblies, including top-down models, ensuring proper structure and configuration.
-
Develop detailed drawings with exploded views, bills of materials (BOMs), and complete release packages for production.
-
Administer CAD data flow from prototype through to production, ensuring accurate version control and traceability.
-
Manage and maintain CAD templates, libraries, and off-the-shelf component models for consistent reuse across projects.
-
Source and integrate off-the-shelf components by downloading and incorporating supplier CAD models into assemblies.
-
Modify and adapt mechanical components such as bearings, housings, and covers to meet system requirements.
-
Design simple mechanical components including covers, brackets, fastener selections, and gasket interfaces.
-
Apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) in accordance with ASME Y14.5 on drawings and models.
-
Incorporate engineering feedback, including model edits based on finite element analysis (FEA) or other engineering results.
-
Generate CAD screenshots, section views, and visual materials to support design reviews and gate reviews.
-
Act as a CAD execution partner to mechanical engineers by translating design intent into robust, manufacturable CAD models and documentation.
-
Produce production-ready documentation for shipped products, ensuring completeness and accuracy beyond conceptual designs.
-
Collaborate with cross-functional teams working on mechanical and electromechanical machines such as robotics, manufacturing equipment, test equipment, industrial machinery, automotive, or aerospace systems.
Essential Skills
-
Approximately 5 years of hands-on experience in design and drafting using Creo Parametric (or Pro/ENGINEER).
-
Strong, hands-on proficiency with Creo as a primary CAD tool for parts, assemblies, and detailed drawings.
-
Strong, hands-on proficiency with Windchill for product lifecycle management and CAD data control.
-
Demonstrated ability to operate as a CAD power user, with a career focus on CAD modeling and drafting.
-
Experience applying GD&T in accordance with ASME Y14.5 on mechanical drawings.
-
Experience creating production documentation for shipped products rather than only concept or prototype work.
-
Background working with mechanical or electromechanical machines such as robotics, manufacturing equipment, test equipment, industrial machines, automotive, or aerospace systems.
-
Comfort working in a role that emphasizes CAD execution and documentation rather than a traditional mechanical engineering career path.
-
Ability to collaborate closely with mechanical engineers and translate design intent into accurate CAD models and drawings.
-
Willingness and ability to work in a hybrid arrangement with periodic on-site presence.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
-
Experience with sheet metal design in CAD environments.
-
Experience creating and managing bills of materials (BOMs) within CAD and PLM systems.
-
Familiarity with mechanical design best practices for manufacturability and assembly.
-
Experience beyond consumer products or plastics alone, with exposure to more complex mechanical or electromechanical systems strongly preferred.
-
Career designers and drafters are highly suitable for this role; engineers who strongly gravitate toward CAD work may also be considered, with the understanding that this path focuses on CAD rather than a traditional mechanical engineering trajectory.
Work Environment
The role offers a heavily hybrid work arrangement initially, with an expectation of approximately four days per month on-site. Over time, the position transitions into a more balanced hybrid schedule, requiring regular in-person work at designated facilities, including locations in the Bay Area and in Oregon. The environment centers on extensive use of Creo and Windchill, with daily interaction in a digital product development and PLM ecosystem. Work involves collaborating with engineering teams focused on mechanical and electromechanical machines, supporting projects from prototype through production.
