The Planning & Development Department (PDD) guides the physical development of the city by preserving our historic sites, planning what can be built where, and ensuring safe construction of buildings and infrastructure. A host of advisory and governing bodies of residents as well as elected officials provide oversight as the city grows and needs arise. The process is governed through development and enforcement of city codes and ordinances. Planning and Development is looking to fill a vacancy for Fire Prevention Specialist II for the Plan Review section.

The Fire Prevention Specialist II for PDD performs advanced technical fire prevention, complex plan review, and inspection work that is of a diversified and complex nature.

Duties of this role include:

Performing advanced technical fire prevention, complex plan review, and inspection work that is of a diversified and complex nature.
Responsible for making decision requiring discretion, judgment, and familiarity with laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards.
Providing analysis and approval of plans, specifications, and construction documents for buildings, processes, operations, and fire protection systems and equipment to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards. Compliance is ordered when violations are discovered.
Reviews and analyzes various underground Fire Lines, Sprinkler Installation, Fire Access, Kitchen Hoods, Spray Booths and Fire Alarm drawings for compliance with International Code Council (ICC) Fire and Building Code Compliance.
Provides technical advice of moderate complexity to City staff, private developers, and the public.

Opportunity to underfill at the Fire Prevention Specialist I level

The Fire Prevention Specialist I inspect properties for conformance with federal, state, county, and locally recognized laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards. They are responsible for performing technical fire prevention, plan review, and inspection work of a diversified nature. Fire Prevention Specialists I are responsible for decisions requiring discretion, judgment, and familiarity with laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Fire Prevention Supervisor or Fire Protection Engineer.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

Knowledge of the City of Phoenix Fire Code, Building Code, ICC Fire code, ordinances, laws, regulations, and standards.
Knowledge of mathematical principles required to perform Fire related technical calculations.
Knowledge of Fire prevention practices.
Ability to understand and interpret Graphix instructions, such as blueprints, schematic drawings, layouts, or other visual aids.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products, Word, Excel & Power Point and Teams.

SALARY

Fire Prevention Specialist II

Pay Range: $30.31 to $47.01 per hour.

Hiring Range: $30.31 to $36.84 per hour.

Fire Prevention Specialist I

Pay Range: $26.18 to $40.61 per hour.

Hiring Range: $26.18 to $31.82 per hour.

Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification.
Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.

Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 355. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.

Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Fire Prevention Specialist II

Two years of experience as a Fire Prevention Specialist I and ICC Certified Fire Inspector II certification
OR Three years of experience as a Fire Prevention Specialist in another government or private entity along with ICC Certified Fire Inspector II certification
At time of hire, must possess the following one certification:
- ICC Fire Inspector II (67)
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted
All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Completion of the Fire Prevention Specialist Trainee program and an ICC Certified Fire Inspector I certification OR two years of experience as a Fire Prevention Specialist in another government or private entity, as well as ICC Certified Fire Inspector I certification.

Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

One year of Customer Service experience.
