Law Office of Mark J. Devine is seeking a full-time Criminal Defense Attorney to join our legal team in Charleston, South Carolina.
We are looking for a licensed attorney who is confident in the courtroom, organized, client-focused, and able to handle criminal defense matters in a fast-paced law firm environment. Candidates with strong criminal defense experience are preferred, but we are open to training the right licensed attorney.
Position Details
Location: Charleston, SC
Schedule: Full-time, Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Responsibilities
- Represent clients in criminal defense matters in South Carolina courts.
- Appear at bond hearings, preliminary hearings, plea hearings, motion hearings, trials, and other court proceedings.
- Review police reports, discovery, warrants, evidence, charging documents, and case files.
- Meet with clients to discuss case status, legal options, strategy, and next steps.
- Negotiate with prosecutors and opposing counsel when appropriate.
- Draft motions, pleadings, legal memoranda, client letters, and other case-related documents.
- Prepare cases for hearings, negotiations, trial, and resolution.
- Communicate professionally with clients, courts, prosecutors, law enforcement, witnesses, and firm staff.
- Work closely with paralegals and support staff to ensure deadlines, filings, and client communication are handled properly.
- Maintain accurate case notes and updates in the firm’s case management system.
- Provide compassionate, professional representation to clients facing criminal charges.
Requirements
- Must be licensed and in good standing with the South Carolina Bar.
- Criminal defense experience preferred.
- Courtroom experience preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage deadlines and multiple cases at one time.
- Comfortable appearing in court and advocating for clients.
- Strong legal research, drafting, and case preparation skills.
- Professional, dependable, organized, and team-oriented.
- Ability to work with clients from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience handling criminal defense cases in South Carolina.
- Experience with bond hearings, plea negotiations, preliminary hearings, motions, and trial preparation.
- Knowledge of South Carolina criminal procedure and local court practices.
- Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus, but not required.
Compensation
Compensation will be based on experience and qualifications.
