St. Vincent de Paul of Bend is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving individuals and families in need throughout our community. We provide essential food, clothing, and limited financial assistance with compassion and respect. Our Food Pantry is one of the largest direct-service programs in the area, offering critical food support to thousands of local residents each year.
Position Summary
This is a great entry-level position if you are interested in non-profit work. This is not a desk job. The Pantry Manager is at the heart of daily operations in the food pantry, coordinating volunteers, managing food inventory, assisting clients, and making dozens of decisions on the spot. It’s a physically active, people-centered role that keeps you on your feet and engaged from start to finish. The right candidate thrives on movement, problem-solving in real time, and leading with empathy under pressure.
Key Responsibilities
Pantry Operations
● Lead all daily pantry activities, maintaining a clean, organized, and client-ready space.
● Perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 70 lbs, frequent walking, long periods on feet, moving supplies throughout the day, including stocking, sorting, and loading/unloading food.
● Uphold rigorous food safety and cleanliness standards throughout the day.
● Maintain inventory, coordinate deliveries, and keep the pantry stocked and organized.
● Drive a box truck to NeighborImpact in Redmond every Monday to load 4,000-9,000 pounds of food to be unloaded and distributed at the pantry.
Volunteer Leadership
● Use Civic Champs to schedule and train a large base of volunteers who make pantry service possible.
● Provide clear direction, support, and encouragement to a rotating group of volunteers.
● Foster a welcoming, mission-driven environment where volunteers feel valued and supported.
● Troubleshoot scheduling challenges and interpersonal dynamics with professionalism and patience.
Client & Community Engagement
● Provide a dignified, supportive, and respectful experience for every client, regardless of circumstances.
● Communicate effectively and compassionately across cultural and language differences (Spanish strongly preferred).
● Represent St. Vincent de Paul of Bend as a trusted, compassionate community partner, while creating a welcoming, respectful environment for clients from all walks of life.
● Serve as a steady presence in moments of high demand or stress.
Qualifications
● High school diploma or equivalent required.
● Valid driver’s license and ability to drive a delivery/box truck.
● Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
● Ability to work well with diverse populations and manage sensitive client interactions.
● Experience working or volunteering in a nonprofit, food distribution, hospitality, service industry, or social services setting preferred.
● Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
● Proficiency with volunteer management software preferred.
Physical and Environmental Qualifications
● Ability to repeatedly lift, push, or pull up to 70 lbs, kneel, twist, and squat.
● Ability to stand and be on your feet for at least 10 hours a day.
● Candidate must be able to complete the physical requirements with or without a reasonable accommodation.
