Apparel Buyer & Merchandiser — GearHeads (Moab, UT)
Job Type: Full-time Location: Moab, UT (on-site)
About GearHeads
GearHeads is Moab's go-to outdoor retailer, serving both the steady stream of adventurers passing through on their way to Arches and Canyonlands National Parks and the local community of hikers, climbers, campers, backpackers, and outdoor enthusiasts who call Moab home. We carry one of the largest climbing gear selections in the country and one of the largest local footwear and apparel selections around. Our buying decisions are shaped by a market that's truly seasonal -- with visitor traffic surging every spring and fall -- so we need someone who can plan inventory around that rhythm, not fight against it.
The Role
We're looking for an Apparel Buyer & Merchandiser to own the selection, ordering, seasonal planning, floor merchandising, and inventory management for our apparel categories. You'll work closely with our buying team to build assortments that serve both the tourist walking in for a last-minute layer before a hike and the local climber who's been shopping with us for years -- and make sure that product is well-organized, well-stocked, and well-presented once it's on the floor.
What You'll Do
- Select and prebook apparel lines across categories (technical hiking, climbing, camping, and outdoor lifestyle apparel) from our vendor partners
- Plan buys around Moab's dual tourism peaks (spring and fall) and the slower shoulder seasons
- Track sell-through and adjust reorders, markdowns, and replenishment based on real performance data
- Monitor vendor line changes, discontinuations, and new product releases, and identify replacement lines when gaps open up
- Reconcile purchase orders against vendor confirmations and invoices
- Plan and execute apparel merchandising on the sales floor — layout, displays, and seasonal resets that make product easy to shop
- Manage apparel inventory levels, including receiving, stock counts, and backstock organization
- Stay current on trends in the outdoor apparel industry and bring new brands or product ideas to the table
What We're Looking For
- 2–3+ years of experience in retail buying, merchandising, inventory management, or a closely related role (apparel buying experience strongly preferred)
- Strong organizational skills and comfort working with spreadsheets, purchase order systems, and inventory tracking
- An eye for product and a genuine interest in outdoor apparel and gear
- Ability to plan ahead for seasonal demand swings and adjust on the fly when they don't go as planned
- Clear communicator who can work well with vendors and coordinate with an internal team
- Personal experience with hiking, climbing, camping, or backpacking is a big plus -- you'll be buying for people who do these things, and it helps to be one of them
Why GearHeads
- Work in one of the most scenic outdoor towns in the country, surrounded by two national parks
- Be part of a small, close-knit team where your buying decisions have a direct, visible impact on the store
- Employee discount on top-tier outdoor gear and apparel
- Room to grow as our buying team and store continue to expand
When does the job begin?
- We currently have a buyer and are not in a rush. We are looking for someone who is an excellent match for our shop. We plan to take our time fielding applicants.
- Ideally, we will hire someone around the start of 2027. Possibly sooner, for the right candidate.
Pay: From $24.00 per hour
Benefits:
- Employee discount
- Flexible schedule
- Paid time off
Work Location: In person
