Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented MDS Coordinator to join our healthcare team. The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive understanding of the Minimum Data Set (MDS) process, along with expertise in clinical documentation, coding, and regulatory compliance. As an MDS Coordinator, you will play a vital role in ensuring accurate assessment, documentation, and reimbursement for long-term care and skilled nursing facility residents. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to quality patient care while maintaining adherence to federal and state healthcare regulations.
Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough assessments of residents using the MDS tool, ensuring compliance with clinical documentation standards and CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) regulations.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including nursing, therapy, and medical staff to gather accurate clinical information for MDS completion.
- Review medical records, physician notes, and other documentation to ensure completeness and accuracy prior to submission.
- Ensure timely completion and submission of MDS assessments within regulatory deadlines, supporting appropriate reimbursement and quality reporting.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of healthcare policies related to Medicare, Medicaid, long-term care regulations, and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act).
- Utilize EMR/EHR systems such as Cerner, Epic, or Athenahealth for documentation review and data entry.
- Provide education and training to staff regarding documentation requirements, coding standards including CPT (Current Procedural Terminology), ICD-9/10 (International Classification of Diseases), DRG (Diagnosis-Related Group), and utilization management practices.
Requirements
- Proven experience in long-term care facilities or skilled nursing environments with strong familiarity in MDS coordination and clinical documentation improvement.
- Knowledge of health regulation policies including CMS guidelines, NCQA standards, and state healthcare regulations.
- Proficiency in EMR/EHR systems such as Cerner, Epic, or Athenahealth; experience with Microsoft Office is preferred.
- Strong understanding of medical coding including ICD-9/10 codes, CPT coding, DRGs, and utilization review processes.
- Background in nursing or healthcare administration with acute care or inpatient experience is highly desirable.
- Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail; ability to manage multiple assessments simultaneously under strict deadlines.
- Effective communication skills for training staff and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams.
- Knowledge of physiology, anatomy, medical terminology, and clinical documentation standards necessary for accurate assessments.
