Specialty Orthopaedics is an independent, physician-owned orthopedic practice in the
Chicagoland area. We strive to give high quality care to our orthopaedic patients. Since
we are a small practice, we offer patients personalized care and attention.
The physician assistant will provide direct patient care in support of and under the
supervision of our orthopaedic surgeon. Duties include assisting in the outpatient clinic,
hospital and operating room, adhering to standard practice guidelines to provide safe
and effective medical care.. All duties will be as defined in the scope of State of Illinois
standards and the Physician Assistant practice act.
We are seeking a motivated, hard working, compassionate, detail-oriented
Physician Assistant to join our team and work with our board certified, fellowship
trained Orthopedic Sports medicine surgeon specializing in the treatment of
conditions of the Shoulder, Hip and Knee. Surgical care consists of arthroscopy,
arthroplasty and fracture care.
Responsibilities
- Clinic and surgical center responsibilities
- Occasional inpatient rounding in the hospital (about once every 6-8 weeks)
- Assist the surgeon with major and minor surgical procedures in the operating
room.
- Position, prep and drape the patient
- Close surgical wounds and perform post-operative wound care
- Apply dressings, casts, splints, braces, etc.
- Perform minor surgical procedures within scope of licensure.
- See patients in the clinic both independently and with supervision. Dictate clinic
progress notes. Order appropriate tests and develop patient treatment plans with
physician approval.
- Perform joint aspirations/injections.
- Apply casts, splints, braces, etc. under supervision of the physician.
- Remove staples, sutures as needed
- Assist in fielding/triaging physician calls.
- Order and review lab results, x-rays, and MRI/CT results
- Confer with physician regarding new patient findings and potential diagnosis and
treatment.
- Review pre-operative instructions and explain the surgical process to patients
who are about to have surgery
- Provide diagnosis and treatment services to established patients and
postoperative patients
- Prescribe medication and treatments in accordance with physician protocols, and
ensure that all prescriptions and required notes are in patient’s medical record
- Follows applicable ICD 10 and billing guidelines.
- Return patient phone messages at designated times throughout the day; follow
through with appropriate action; documents action taken in patient chart.
Physical requirements
- Positioning requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting
patients, as well as manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
- Employee will occasionally be asked to lift and carry items weighing up to 30
pounds. Position requires lifting associated with patient transfers (up to 50 lbs.)
- Normal visual acuity and hearing are required.
- The employee will work under stressful conditions and occasionally work
irregular hours.
- The employee will be exposed to bodily fluids on a regular basis.
- The employee will have frequent exposure to communicable diseases, blood-
borne pathogens, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations
and other conditions common to a clinical environment.
- Travel to all associated clinics, hospitals and/or facilities
Educational Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited physician assistant program with completed residency.
- Physician Assistant IL state licensure up to date
- Training in orthopedic care preferred
- Masters of Science in Physician Assistant Studies.
- Active Certification from NCCPA
- Active Licensure as Physician’s Assistant in the State of Illinois
- ACLS desirable; current CPR required
Qualifications and Experience
- Two years of experience in physician office/hospital is preferred. But position is
open to new graduates.
- Ability to make appropriate, thoughtful and independent decisions regarding care
- Show professionalism, appropriate judgement and competence within the
specialty
- Experience with surgical assisting, office based management of medical
conditions
- EHR Software experience
- Able to lift and assist patients
- Require good time management skills, self motivation and organization
- Strong interpersonal skills, able to work well and communicate professionally
with physicians, patients and staff in all levels in the organization.
- Use good judgment to determine if a problem requires consultation, referral or
evaluation by the Supervising Physician or other health care professional.
Job Type: Full-time
Salary: $100,000–$110,000 annually, with compensation negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
