POSITION SUMMARY:
Apparent Inc. is looking for a Senior Design Engineer to support the company’s commercial efforts broadly, acting as a technical liaison between the product and business development teams, as well as contributing directly to the projects and programs we build with our external partners. The individual will be the primary technical resource for Apparent product users, installers, and partners in the field, and the hands, eyes, and ears of the Apparent team in the field. Working in conjunction with the commercial and product teams as the key technical advisor and product advocate, the Sr. Design Engineer will actively drive and manage the technology evaluation stage of the sales process, as well as identify and provide reliable solutions for all technical and installation issues to assure complete customer satisfaction. Projects assigned can be broad in scope with some degree of complexity.
The Sr. Design Engineer will work closely with the President, the Chief Technology Officer, the Director of Business Development, and other functions as needed. The ideal candidate will be an experienced engineer, preferably electrical engineer, with a successful track record of solving difficult technical issues, architecting solutions to meet customer needs, and providing critical feedback to R&D based on customer input.
This is a full-time position located at Apparent’s headquarters in Novato, CA, with occasional travel to Davis, CA, as well as customer sites and external meetings.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Aid in the response to RFIs and RFPs in a timely and professional manner to win bids
- Communicate customer requirements and competitive data, including feature needs, and value proposition to the product and business development teams and senior management
- Provide sales support including system layouts, single line diagrams, energy production modeling, and cost details
- Provide construction support throughout design, permitting, construction and interconnection.
- Provide input to senior management on go-to-market strategies
- Prepare and oversee solar project designs including single line drawings, wiring diagrams, electrical site plans and equipment layouts.
- Develop engineering and estimating tools to continuously optimize cost and quality
- Stay current on codes, standards, new solar technologies, jurisdictional/utility requirements, and installation best practices
- Attend site visits, team meetings with internal & external partners, and customer calls & meetings
- Manage multiple complex projects simultaneously with minimal review and oversight
REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Construction related field
- 5+ years of engineering experience; 3+ years of direct design engineering experience with customers, preferably electrical engineering
- Ability to read architectural, mechanical, and electrical blueprints
- Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical individuals
- Ability to assess customer requirements, identify business problems, and demonstrate proposed solutions
- Ability to perform conceptual engineering design of PV+ESS systems, estimate project costs, and develop project budgets
- Strong interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to influence and drive others
- Flawless organizational and follow-up skills
- Excellent analytical skills, include project modeling
- Understand all supporting calculations of solar and storage design, including production, load profiles, shading, conductor & conduit sizing.
- High level knowledge of electrical design, materials, and methods of construction in solar and electrical systems.
DESIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
- Energy industry experience, specifically solar, storage, and energy management a plus
- The ability to help the company become a thought leader in the energy space
- The ability to sit on technical panels and deliver strong technical presentations to prospective customers
- National Electrical Code (NEC) knowledge
- Experience training on technical topics
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and the ability to generate construction level drawings.
- Thorough knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) as it relates to commercial and utility scale projects.
- Experience conducting site walks to assess electrical interconnection complexity
- PV Modeling experience using PVSyst or Helioscope.
- Professional Engineer (PE) stamp a plus.
