We are seeking a highly qualified Plumbing Engineer to join our MEP Engineering Division at our Fairfax, VA headquarters. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in plumbing systems design across a broad range of project types, including laboratories, hospitals, commercial, institutional, educational, and transportation facilities. This role requires a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment and can work both independently and as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team.
Candidates must hold at least a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field and have a minimum of five years of experience in the Architectural/Engineering/Construction industry. A Professional Engineering (PE) License is preferred. Experience incorporating sustainable (LEED) design methods is a plus.
Key Responsibilities
Collaborate in multi-discipline project teams to develop drawings and specification documents for issuance to architects, contractors, and building owners.
Lead plumbing system design from conceptual phase through construction documents, including domestic water supply, sanitary drainage, storm drainage, natural gas, and specialty systems.
Perform engineering calculations for pipe sizing, fixture unit loads, equipment selection, and system hydraulics.
Develop plumbing specifications and design narratives aligned with project requirements and applicable codes.
Coordinate plumbing designs with architectural and other engineering disciplines to ensure seamless integration.
Survey and evaluate existing conditions for renovation and adaptive reuse projects.
Ensure all designs comply with applicable local, state, and national plumbing codes and standards.
Perform construction administration, including conducting field inspections, preparing inspection reports, reviewing submittals, and responding to RFIs.
Mentor and review work of junior engineers to support quality assurance and professional development.
Other tasks as needed to ensure timely and thorough support to our clients.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field with a sound knowledge of engineering fundamentals
5+ years of experience in plumbing design within the Facilities Design Industry
Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred
Proficiency in AutoCAD required; Revit experience preferred
Strong understanding of plumbing codes, standards, and regulations
Good communication skills essential for team-based working and client interaction
Excellent planning and organization skills required for our fast-paced environment
Must be highly motivated, proactive, and willing to take on new challenges

LEED AP or USGBC LEED Accreditation
Plumbing PE License
Experience or interest in sustainable design and high-performance buildings
Familiarity with BIM coordination workflows
