Become a Financial Advisor (Career Changers Welcome)
You're good with people. You're disciplined. You know you're capable of more than your current job is giving you.
You've spent years showing up, earning trust, and delivering for other people. Maybe you're a teacher, a nurse, a veteran, a manager, or someone just starting out who has already figured out more about real life than your resume shows.
You're good with people. You're good under pressure. And somewhere along the way you started wondering what it would look like to build something for yourself, where your effort has a direct line to your outcome and the work actually matters to the people you're doing it for.
That's who we're looking for.
Thoroughbred Advisors is an independent financial services firm with offices in Latham, White Plains, Queensbury, New York City, and Staten Island. We help families and individuals with life insurance, retirement planning, and wealth protection. We don't hire people to fit a role. We look for people who genuinely want to help others navigate some of the most important decisions of their lives and build a career doing it.
The Opportunity Is Real
The financial services industry needs more good people in it. Millions of Americans are heading into retirement without a real plan and without a professional they trust to help them make one. The advisor workforce isn't keeping pace with that demand.
This isn't a crowded field you're trying to break into. It's an open one.
What You Bring That Nobody Can Give You
Finance is learnable. What we can't train is the thing that actually makes someone good at this work.
Career changers bring a track record. You've had conversations where the stakes were real and someone needed you to be steady. You've earned trust in rooms where it had to be earned. You're not starting over. You're translating.
People earlier in their journey bring hunger and perspective that doesn't always show up on a resume yet. Maybe you put yourself through school. Maybe you've watched people you love make financial decisions with no real guidance and always wanted to be the person who could change that for someone.
We can teach you the technical side. We can't teach you internal drive and to care about your career and your clients.
Who Succeeds Here
We're looking for someone whose ability to connect with people, earn trust, and get things done has always been bigger than the role they've been in.
You bring:
- The kind of communication skills that make people feel heard.
- Discipline and follow-through when nobody is watching or pushing you.
- The drive to build something of your own and the patience to do it right.
- Genuine curiosity about people's lives, goals, and financial situations.
- Comfort with an income that reflects your effort directly; the upside is real, and so is the accountability.
- Coachability; you want feedback because you want to be good at this, not just comfortable.
Backgrounds that translate well: teaching, nursing, military service, management, athletes, sales, real estate, coaching, operations, and customer-facing roles of any kind.
No financial services experience required.
What the Role Looks Like
You'll meet with individuals and families, understand where they stand, and help them build a real plan. You'll grow your own client base through your network, referrals, and doing right by the people you work with. What you build is yours and what you earn reflects it.
- Meet with clients one-on-one to understand their goals and recommend the right solutions.
- Build and maintain your own book of business.
- Complete licensing with our full support.
- Work alongside experienced advisors invested in your growth.
Licensing and Compensation
You don't need to come in licensed. We'll get you there.
- Life and Health licensing typically takes two to three weeks.
- Securities licensing (SIE, Series 7, Series 66) is fully supported within your first six months.
This is a commission and fee-based role. Income grows through renewals, referrals, and a client base that compounds over time.
Full-time representatives are W-2 statutory employees with access to health, vision, and dental benefits.
What Working Here Looks Like
- You'll be in the office regularly early on; that's where the mentorship and momentum are.
- Scheduling is flexible, but the expectation is that you're building and results matter.
- You'll work alongside people who have built successful practices in this market and are genuinely invested in your growth.
- Representatives who hit their goals earn annual five-star trips.
How We Hire
We respond to every applicant and keep the process moving.
- Apply and answer a few short questions.
- Interview session with our founder.
- Follow-up interview with a member of our leadership team.
Before you apply, ask yourself three things:
- Have you spent years earning trust in a role where it wasn't given to you automatically?
- Are you ready for an income that reflects exactly what you put in, with no cap and no floor?
- Do you have the patience to build something in year one that pays you for the next twenty?
If those land as yes, we'd really like to meet you.
