Title: Literacy Intervention Teacher
Reports To: MS/HS Principal
Employment Status: Full Time
Qualifications/Experience:
- Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in the area of Literacy/Reading Specialist, Curriculum & Instruction, or related field with a focus on adolescent literacy or intervention systems
- Experience implementing intervention programs and progress monitoring systems
- Prior experience with MTSS, RTI, or PBIS frameworks preferred
- Experience analyzing student data to inform instruction and interventions
- Strong knowledge of adolescent literacy development and evidence-based intervention strategies
- Expertise in data analysis and progress monitoring tools
- Ability to lead teams and facilitate professional learning communities (PLCs)
- Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills
- Cultural competency and trauma-informed practices
- Minimum of 5 years of continuous teaching experience in grades 6-12 English Language Arts
- Demonstrated experience working with at-risk, struggling, and/or multilingual learners
- Current Professional Teaching Certificate in Secondary Education 6 -12 or Reading K-12
- Reading Specialist endorsement (preferred)
General Description:
The Secondary Literacy Interventionist is responsible for leading and implementing a comprehensive Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework focused on improving literacy outcomes for at-risk students in grades 6–12. This role combines direct instructional support with systems-level leadership to ensure that all students receive targeted, data-driven interventions aligned with Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 supports. The position requires strong collaboration with teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, and families to promote equitable access to high-quality instruction and interventions, particularly for students with academic gaps, trauma-related needs, and/or English language development needs. The Literacy Intervention teacher is responsible for group and individual instruction of reading for students who have been identified as academically at-risk in the areas of reading, writing, and language, and when administering Title I services, meet state and federal guidelines. When appropriate, the Literacy Interventionist will develop lessons for paraprofessionals to administer and will measure students’ progress.
Responsibilities:
MTSS Leadership & Coordination
- Collaborate with the secondary principal to lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the school’s MTSS framework (academic focus)
- Coordinate Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 intervention systems for literacy
- Facilitate MTSS team meetings, including data review, and intervention planning
- Develop and maintain clear intervention protocols and documentation systems
- Ensure fidelity of implementation across grade levels and content areas
Data & Progress Monitoring
- Oversee universal screening processes and ensure timely data collection
- Analyze student performance data to identify trends, gaps, and intervention needs
- Monitor student progress and adjust interventions accordingly
- Support staff in using data to drive instructional decisions
Direct Student Support
- Provide targeted literacy interventions for identified students (small group and/or individual)
- Support students with reading comprehension, writing, vocabulary, and foundational literacy skills
- Collaborate with special education and ESL staff to align supports
Staff Support & Professional Development
- Provide coaching and support to teachers on:
- Differentiated instruction
- Literacy strategies across content areas
- Intervention implementation
- Lead professional development related to MTSS and literacy best practices
- Support teachers and paraprofessionals in delivering interventions effectively
Collaboration & Communication
- Collaborate with administrators, counselors, and teachers to support student success
- Communicate with families regarding student progress and intervention plans
- Serve as a liaison between general education, special education, and support services
Program Development & Compliance
- Evaluate the effectiveness of intervention programs and recommend improvements
- Ensure compliance with district, state, and federal guidelines related to intervention services
- Assist in scheduling and structuring intervention blocks within the school day
