Nails & Faces of Joy, LLC is seeking a compassionate, dependable, and professional Licensed Barber or Cosmetologist to support our New York State Office of Mental Health contract at Hutchings Psychiatric Center in Syracuse, NY.
This position is ideal for licensed professionals looking to supplement their income while making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Services are provided in a secure behavioral health setting where professional grooming promotes dignity, confidence, hygiene, and self-esteem.
Whether you're an experienced barber, cosmetologist, semi-retired professional, or simply looking for flexible work a few days each month, we'd love to hear from you.
Schedule
This is a highly flexible position averaging 1–5 weekdays per month. Workdays are coordinated between our company and the facility based on patient needs.
Services are typically provided on a rotating basis within adult inpatient treatment units, with occasional services provided to the children's unit when requested.
Responsibilities
Provide professional grooming services including:
- Men's and women's haircuts
- Fades and tapers
- Shape-ups and line-ups
- Beard and mustache trimming
- Braids
- Cornrows
- Twists
- Loc maintenance (no hair added)
- Maintain sanitation and infection control standards
- Clean workstation after each service
- Work respectfully with individuals receiving behavioral health services
- Maintain patient confidentiality
- Follow all facility safety and security procedures
Services focus on routine grooming and hygiene rather than full-service salon treatments.
QualificationsRequired
- Current New York State Barber License or New York State Cosmetology License
- Minimum 1 year of professional experience
- Experience working with all hair textures and ethnic hair types
- Experience with fades, tapers, beard grooming, braids, twists, cornrows, and loc maintenance
- Professional appearance and excellent customer service
- Strong communication skills
- Reliable, punctual, and self-motivated
- Ability to work independently while following facility protocols
Pre-Employment Requirements
Selected contractors must successfully complete all required onboarding before beginning work, including:
- Background screening
- Justice Center requirements
- Staff Exclusion List screening
- Medicaid exclusion screening
- Tuberculosis (TB) screening/documentation
- Required immunization documentation
- Facility orientation
- Infection control training
- Annual mandatory compliance training
The facility requires contractors to comply with its infection prevention policies, health screening requirements, and orientation before providing services.

Contractor Provides:
- Clippers
- Trimmers
- Shears
- Combs and brushes
- Professional barber/cosmetology tools
Company/Facility Provides:
- Barber chair/workstation
- Towels and capes
- Select supplies
- Designated work area
- Facility staff support during patient services
Facility staff remain with patients throughout services, and contractors are never left alone with a patient.
