POSITION SUMMARY:
Assist RN in providing health services to students. Assist RN in promoting health education and preventive health practices for students.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
-
Graduate of an accredited vocational nursing education program
-
Valid vocational nurse license to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nurse Examiners
-
Certified by Texas Department of Health to conduct vision, hearing, and scoliosis screenings at next available training opportunity (if not already certified at hire)

CPR Certification
Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of health assessment to identify student health issues

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience:
-
Two years nursing experience, preferably in community health
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Nursing Services
-
Ability to work independently in cases where RN is unavailable.
-
Provide temporary and emergency care for sick and injured students or staff according to district policy and procedures.
-
Notify parents of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached).
-
Administer First Aid/CPR/AED when necessary.
-
Administer medications according to district policy and procedures.
-
Perform state-mandated vision, hearing, spinal, and Acanthosis Nigricans screenings and refer students as needed. Enter screening data for state reporting by the district deadlines.
-
Evaluate students for communicable diseases/conditions and follow state reporting and exclusion requirements.
-
Perform health procedures for students with health needs per physician orders.
-
Implement individualized health plans (IHPs) for students.
Instruction
-
Assist RN in the development of campus health education curriculum and provide health education to individuals and groups.
-
Assist RN with providing health counseling and instruction to individual students.
-
Provide or assist RN with campus and district staff training and education related to health services.
Consultation
-
Serve as health liaison between school, physicians, parents, and community.
-
Assess student problems and make appropriate referrals working with students, teachers, parents, and medical and health care professionals as needed.

Participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, crisis team, and school committees.
-
Participate in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse.
Administration
- Review, evaluate, and maintain student immunization records in compliance with state immunization requirements.
- Enforce procedures to ensure proper program administration according to district policy.
- Supervise and train nurse aide(s) in clinic procedures and responsibilities according to district policy.
- Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate, updated health records on all students.
- Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.
- Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in health services area.
- Assist RN to develop and coordinate continuing evaluation of campus health program and make changes based on findings.
- Report potential health and safety hazards to principal.
- Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
- Maintain confidentiality following FERPA and HIPPA requirements.
- Assist RN with completing AED checks monthly of all building on campus.
- Assist RN with completing Stop the Bleed Kits checks monthly for expiration and replacement in all buildings.
- Participate in the preparation of Emergency Operations Plans for the campus.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
